  • The Bi-College Department of East Asian Studies at Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges invites applications for a full time, beginning tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chinese literature and culture at Bryn Mawr College to begin July 1, 2013. A Ph.D. prior to the appointment start date is required. We seek candidates with excellence in teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate will teach Chinese literature and culture and will teach annually an advanced Chinese language course. The ability to teach the visual culture of China is desirable. Teaching load is 5 courses per year at the undergraduate level on a two-semester system.

    • If applications were only due on 11/30, and acknowledgments weren't sent out until 12/13, it seems unlikely that a campus visit would happen within 2.5 weeks, unless there was a 'favorite' candidate already.  
    • Though the academic job process might lead you to believe otherwise, search committees can sometimes work very fast indeed, especially if they're at a small school competing against bigger schools with bigger budgets. If they wait until mid-late January to make decisions or hold Skype interviews they'll already have fallen behind most other schools, which decreases their chance of nabbing a good candidate. It also helps if they're well organized and working with the same goals in mind. This one definitely happened fast, but it's not impossibly anomolous and it doesn't necessarily mean that there's a favorite candidate. After all, if one believes the wiki, there's a 'favorite' candidate for each and every job that's ever been posted.
    • Also, the 12/18 date seems to be the date the invite was extended, not the date of the actual visit.

Dartmouth College - TT Assistant Professor in Chinese Language and Literature[]

  • The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Chinese Language and Literature. Appointment will become effective July 1, 2013, with teaching duties beginning in September 2013. Applicants for this position must have native or near native proficiency in English and Modern Standard Chinese, and a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The field of specialization is open, but we have particular interest in scholars working in traditional Chinese fiction or modern literature. It is our hope that the appointee will share our vision of treating language and literature courses as integrated components of an undergraduate liberal arts curriculum.   • The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at FORDHAM UNIVERSITY (New York City) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chinese language, literature and culture, to begin Fall 2013. Northwestern University - Associate or Full Professor[]

  • Northwestern University invites applications for a tenured position, at the Associate or Full Professor level, in late imperial or modern Chinese literature. The person hired will serve as the initial chair of a new Department of Asian Literatures and Cultures (final university approval pending). The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching and experience as an effective administrator. S/he should offer leadership in developing undergraduate curricula, establishing departmental governance, and, at a future date, planning a competitive graduate program.

NYU Shanghai - Open Rank TT Faculty Position - Global Lit. / Chinese Lit.[]

  • NYU Shanghai is currently inviting applications for an OPEN RANK tenure/tenure-track faculty appointment to its Literature Program, in the field of Global Literature. San Francisco State University, Assistant Professorship in Chinese[]

  • The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at San Francisco State University invites applications for an approved tenure-track assistant professorship in Chinese with specialization in second language acquisition and pedagogy, to begin Fall 2013, subject to financial ability. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Syracuse University - TT Assistant Prof.[]

  • The Chinese program in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Chinese Language, Literature and Culture. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chinese language, literature, and culture.  Research areas may include but are not limited to Chinese narrative, poetry, film, or theater.   • The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley, has one-year openings for one to two lecturers in Chinese language, with the possibility of extension. Appointment up to 100% time depending on instructional needs and budgetary resources, effective July 1, 2013. Minimum annual salary is $45,975. Responsibilities include: co-teaching several sections of first-year, second-year, or third-year Chinese language or a combination thereof; supervising Graduate Student Instructors; compiling teaching materials. Requirements: native or near-native fluency in Chinese; good command of English; minimum degree M.A. by date of hire in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or equivalent; experience in teaching Chinese and ability to teach different levels of Chinese at the college level; experience with computer-assisted instruction, online course, and Chinese language instructional software is highly desirable.

This is a three-year, full-time, non-tenure-track position to begin August 15, 2013. The Department of Languages and Culture Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a Lecturer in Chinese. Required qualifications include a Master's in Chinese (MA required, Ph.D. preferred) with emphasis on second-language acquisition; native or near-native fluency in both Mandarin Chinese and English; three years of successful full-time teaching of Mandarin at the college level; a content specialty such as Chinese culture or literature. The candidate is expected to help coordinate a program in Chinese and to develop study abroad opportunities. Essential duties will include teaching 12 semester hours of Chinese classes at different levels each semester; organizing and attending student activities; evidence of engagement in professional development as a language teacher, as well as working with colleagues to enhance the use of technologies and social media resources in language instruction, delivery and learning.
