Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in English or a related field awarded prior to August 23, 2017. Specialization should be in Children's Literature with an interest in Elementary Education. Candidates with K-6 experience are particularly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute to scholarly and creative activity both in their chosen disciplines and to the University's commitment to teacher preparation and general education. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees. The standard teaching responsibility at Northridge is 12 units per semester (4 courses per semester). For the first two years, the teaching responsibility is reduced to 9 units per semester (3 courses per semester). Reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development on a competitive basis.
The Liberal Studies Program is housed in the College of Humanities and provides an interdisciplinary major leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. The Liberal Studies Program has two major options: the Teacher Preparation Program and the Interdisciplinary Studies Option. The Teacher Preparation Program is an undergraduate major that focuses broadly on the liberal arts and specifically on the subject matter areas required for the multiple subject curriculum in elementary classrooms (Grades K-6). The major includes coursework from disciplines in eight subject matter areas: language arts, mathematics, science, history/social sciences, visual and performing arts, health, physical education, and human development. The Interdisciplinary Studies Option is designed for students interested in a broad liberal arts education. The Liberal Studies Program also has three minors: the Humanities Minor, the Russian Studies Minor, and the Sustainability Minor.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of children's literature as literature as well as knowledge regarding the connections between children's literature and issues of literacy in K-6 classroom practices. This position requires collaborative co-teaching across departments and programs and encourages interdisciplinary approaches to elementary education. Candidates will be required to teach ITEP courses (Integrated Teacher Education Program) for the Liberal Studies Program, as well as courses on Children's and Adolescent Literature for the English Department. Candidates may also teach courses in other departments. The tenure-line will be housed in the Liberal Studies Program.

THE UNIVERSITY: Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students. As of spring 2014, the University had 595 faculty with 41% tenure-track.
The University is comprised of six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended and International Education, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. Degrees are offered in 46 majors at the bachelor's level and 15 at the master's level. Sonoma State University occupies 274 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, in Northern California. Located at the foot of the Sonoma hills, the campus is just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco and 40 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean.
THE DEPARTMENT: The English Department has ten full-time faculty, 26 adjunct faculty, and 265 majors. The Department offers a B.A. in English with emphases in literature, Single Subject credential preparation, and creative writing, and an M.A. in English with emphases in literature, rhetoric, and creative writing. It hosts a Writers on Writing series, and the literary magazines Zaum and Volt have their home in the Department, offering students the opportunity to advance their editorial skills in the production of these distinguished periodicals. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of English at Sonoma State University seeks dynamic candidates with proven teaching and leadership abilities in English education as well as interest in writing program development. Desirable qualifications include expertise in several of the following areas: applied linguistics for teachers; working with English language learners; digital/new literacies; reading pedagogy; English grammar (pedagogical and rhetorical); literature, including world, multicultural literature, and/or young adult literature. English education is one of three emphases in the English Department, along with literature and creative writing. Our students are undergraduate English majors who intend to pursue a career in teaching.
Candidates will teach three courses per semester in the following areas: English education pedagogy and methods, composition/rhetoric, literature courses in the English major, specialty courses in the Master’s Program, general education, and composition. Directing M.A. theses in areas of expertise is also expected. In addition to teaching, all faculty are responsible for advising, serving on Department, School, and University committees, continuing research and scholarship in their areas of expertise, developing new contributions to the curriculum, and working with the greater community. For the first two years, the candidate will teach two courses each semester.
In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on campus-wide committees. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and places an emphasis on faculty support of undergraduate research. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in Freshman and Sophomore year programs when available in their schools.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching; potential for successful research and scholarship; and proven ability to work with a diverse student body, ranging from freshmen to graduate students. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in English, English education, or a closely related field. ABD’s will be considered if the degree is in hand by August 21, 2017. Required qualifications include expertise in current approaches to the teaching of literacy and composition, and evidence of culturally sensitive pedagogy and principles. Candidates with a strong background in teacher preparation and a commitment to educational equity and disciplinary innovation are of particular interest. Desirable qualifications include several years of teaching experience at the secondary (6-12) level; university teaching experience; composition; writing pedagogy; writing program development; literature, especially young adult literature; linguistics; familiarity with CCSS; evidence of a commitment to diversity and equity in education through scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement; knowledge of and experience working with multicultural and multilingual populations in public schools; and experience in collaborative work with teachers. Candidates from underrepresented groups and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

Southern Oregon University seeks to hire a tenure-track, 9-month, assistant professor, starting September 16, 2017 in English Education and Literature. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in either English Education or Literature at the start of the appointment, and demonstrated teaching proficiency in English Education and Literature. Our new colleague will have primary upper-level teaching responsibilities in English language arts pedagogy (particularly literature pedagogy) with regular assignments in literature (early American or early British literature), writing, and general education classes. Other responsibilities will include advising undergraduates and mentoring/supervising student teachers, collaborating with the School of Education, and developing active partnerships with area schools and teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses our adolescence (7-12) English education program, as well as supervision of student teachers. Additionally, assistant professors produce research and/or other scholarly and creative activities; provide service to the department and college; and provide academic advisement and mentoring to students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph. D. or Ed. D. in English Education, English, Writing Studies or a related field by time of appointment; record of teaching excellence; evidence of scholarly potential.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Expertise in adolescent literacies, language development and pedagogy, digital and multimodal literacies, and methods are preferred. We seek candidates who have experience working with diverse students and communities, including high-needs urban and rural schools. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching high school or middle school, supervising student teachers, or other relevant employment.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for the position of assistant professor of English specializing in English Education, beginning August 2017. This appointment is a 9-month tenure-track position.
Required qualifications: Ph.D. in English Education or a closely related field; experience teaching English at the middle or high school levels; evidence of a strong potential for gaining external funding; evidence of potential for successful teaching at the university level; evidence of a commitment to continued scholarly activity; and a commitment to promoting diversity in the department and college.
The appointment will be in the Department of English, which participates in a joint doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction (with the College of Education) and collaborates with a number of other curricular areas and centers on campus, including the Charlotte Teachers Institute (http://www.charlotteteachers.org). The Department of English comprises 34 full-time faculty and offers BA and MA degrees with area emphases in English Education, Literature, Creative Writing, Children’s Literature, Linguistics, and Professional/Technical Writing. The program has over 400 majors and more than 60 graduate students.
