The Augsburg College Education Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position to begin September 1, 2014. The person in this position teaches graduate and undergraduate courses (both traditional day and weeknight/weekends) in secondary reading/writing in the content area, methods courses in secondary (5-12) communication/language arts and possibly courses for the K-12 reading endorsement. Other responsibilities include advising students, supervising student teachers, serving on department and college committees, conducting scholarly activities, and serving the professional/K-12 community.

A doctorate in English/literacy education is preferred; ABD will be considered. Also desired are some combination of the following: Secondary licensure in English/Communication/ Language Arts, K-12 Reading Endorsement or advanced reading course work; experience teaching in higher education, background in critical literacy and three or more years of experience teaching in a 5-12th grade school setting. The candidate should be current in literacy, on-line learning and classroom technology and recent changes in K-12 education.

We seek a colleague to work with us on a variety of contemporary issues in education, including understanding and challenging the ways in which systems of privilege and oppression operate in the field of education and teacher education. We are especially interested in someone who will explicitly take a critical and responsive stance toward improving the schooling experiences and life outcomes of traditionally underserved and marginalized youth.

The Baruch College English department is seeking an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Children and/or Young Adult Literature starting in the fall of 2014. We are especially interested in applicants whose approach includes history, folklore, oral traditions, or contemporary cultures. The applicant should demonstrate the potential to make a serious contribution to the field and should have significant teaching experience. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in Children's and/or Young Adult Literature, general education courses in writing and world literature, as well as contribute to the intellectual life of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The successful candidate must have completed the Ph.D in English, comparative literature, or a related field by August 2014.

I just looked this posting up in the MLA JIL and it says the deadline is Nov. 15 (not Nov. 8 as stated above). I'm hesitant to change it though in case I have missed something and would be throwing off others' application timelines. Anyone else see what I see? Am I crazy?

Nope, you're not crazy. The JIL deadline is the 15th, but the deadline as posted on the CUNY site is November 8th. It's possible they might have extended it, but in lieu of actually calling the department and checking I'd go with the earlier date just to be sure. 

OP here. Thanks for the reassurance -- this can be a nerve-wracking process, and an inconsistency like this just adds to the stress. I was able to send in my application by the earlier date, but I hope someone from Baruch is reading this and realizes that some other candidates who are just looking at the JIL might think they still have time to apply.

Got the formal rejection. It claimed there were 500 applications. Surely there are not 500 people on the market in our field, right? There is some hope? An American generalist gig got 600+; that makes sense. Just wondering if anyone else was taken aback by that claim.

  • I was told (in person) that there were approximately 250-300 applications, for what that's worth.

Columbia College: Full-time assistant professor (tenure track): Division of Languages and Literatures, English Program.

The English Program at Columbia College (SC) invites applications from candidates who can meet a diverse set of needs. Applicants must hold an earned PhD and have a minimum of three years experience teaching secondary English language arts in order to qualify as a supervisor for students in field placements and directed teaching. In addition to working closely with the director of the English education program, the successful candidate will teach literature (areas other than U.S.) and first-year composition courses. A candidate who is also eager to direct the college writing-across-the-curriculum program will be given special consideration. Both supervising students in the schools and directing the WAC program would contribute to the 4/4 teaching load.

Candidates must have a proven track record of excellence in college teaching and be willing to develop and teach courses as needed for the womens college and the evening college. They must also be willing to engage in service, such as advising majors, attending recruiting events, and serving on division and college committees. Appointment could begin as early as January.

Candidates must submit a letter of interest, a vita, a statement of teaching philosophy, at least three professional letters of reference, and a transcript to Dr. Nancy Tuten, chair of the Division of Languages and Literatures, at ntuten@columbiasc.edu. Each candidate invited for an on-campus interview will engage in a teaching demonstration to provide evidence of a commitment to effective pedagogy and practice. Qualifications: Doctorate degree in English or Education (with a strong emphasis in English education) or an Ed. D. The department offers three undergraduate degree options, enrolling over 120 students, approximately 50 of whom are in the NCATE-recognized secondary teacher certification program. Francis Marion University is a state-supported regional university with a strong emphasis on the liberal arts. As part of her or his 9-month academic year appointment, to be jointly housed across three units: the Departments of English and WRAC, and in the AAAS program, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching four courses (2-2) in English Education (in addition to other possible course offerings) at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
