The Department of Anthropology at Baylor University (Waco, TX) invites applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track). This position is open to applicants with research and teaching interests in human genetics, including molecular anthropology, genetics of modern diseases, genetic epidemiology, evolutionary/population genetics, behavioral genetics, epigenetics, the microbiome, ancient DNA, bioinformatics, and all related topics. Preference will be given to those who use genetic methods to study human health, and who are capable of teaching laboratory-based courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Someone with a combination of active field and laboratory research is preferred. The candidate should possess an earned doctorate (at the time of appointment) in an appropriate field of study.

The new faculty member will join a growing department with interest in applied perspectives on the anthropology of health, broadly conceived. Interest in contributing to a new PhD program (in the Anthropology of Health) is required, and skills appropriate for training graduates for non-academic jobs are preferred. Faculty members are required to contribute to teaching, research, and service. Expectations for an active research agenda include publishing and granting, as well as involving students as appropriate.

Question: I've heard all kinds of rumours about professions of religious identity and church based activity if employed by Baylor. Does anyone know if it's actually true?
Answer: Baylor discriminates against LGBTQ bc these are behaviors "contrary to biblical teaching," so i ca imagine they also discriminate against other non-Christian behaviors too. Second answer, I work at Baylor in Anthro and we have no prob with LGBTQ, other faiths, or anything. To characterize the Anthropology dept as anti-anything is false. We are anthropologists, paleontologists, archaeologists, and work all around the world. To imply/say that we discriminate against anyone is false.

Description: Preference for an expert in biological anthropology with a demonstrated ability to teach osteology, bioarchaeology, and/or forensic anthropology. The specific research focus is open (example subfields: Paleoanthropology, Primatology, Forensic Anthropology), but should include field and/or lab-based research. The program welcomes candidates whose research has an applied focus and who have an established track record of working with undergraduate students. The successful candidate will teach courses ranging from introductory to specialty, with the expectation that lab components will be incorporated at all levels. The program is particularly interested in individuals who can address biocultural issues broadly to work with Anthropology students and colleagues from other subfields, and with those from other disciplines.

The Program: The CI Anthropology program is 7 years old with 75 undergraduate majors and has a dedicated bioanthropology lab with teaching collections. The Bioanthropology hire will be the first in the subfield, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow the discipline at CI. All members of the faculty are expected to assume an active collegial role in the planning and governance of the institution through service on campus-wide, divisional, and Academic Senate committees. Campus faculty are expected to contribute to the CI Mission by facilitating learning within and across disciplines through integrative approaches, emphasizing experiential and service learning, and provide students with multicultural and international experiences.

About the University: CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) is located in Camarillo, California, halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and just minutes from both the mountains and the coast. Eckerd College, Assistant Professor of Anthropology -- Deadline: Nov, 1, 2019 (Phone Interviews)[]

Assistant Professor of Anthropology, tenure-track position, to start in September 2020. Ph.D. in Anthropology required. Teach seven courses per academic year (3-1-3), including regular delivery of Introduction to Anthropology and opportunities to take students abroad during the January term or summer. Specialization open within the subfields of archaeology or biological anthropology, with a strong preference for those with empirically oriented field research programs that encourage undergraduate participation. Candidates with teaching experience in a liberal arts setting and/or the ability to offer a culturally-focused introductory course for the Latin American Studies minor are also desirable.

We seek a broadly trained biological anthropologist with a research specialization in past human populations and a preferred methodological expertise in laboratory techniques including isotopic analyses, paleogenomics, trace elements, or bone histology, and a strong grounding in quantitative methods. The position is broadly conceived to stress the use of modern scientific methodologies for studying human remains with a research agenda focused on important anthropological issues, including questions of gender, health, nutrition, migration, and mobility.

The successful candidate will complement and enhance existing strengths in the Anthropology and Heritage Studies Department; be active in field or laboratory research; and be willing to work to support and/or establish vigorous teaching and research programs involving undergraduates and interdisciplinary graduate students. Some insights I have learned which might be helpful

- Take the diversity statement and diversity issues very seriously

- Many MAGH clasess in the department are taught by bio anthropologists and the search committee chair is a bio anthropologist. Still, the eventual candidate will need to be approved by the entire faculty

- There is a movement within the university (working its way through the faculty senate) to change the titles of lecturers like this to something like "Assistant Professor of Teaching, Associate Professor of Teaching, and Professor of Teaching". This would not change the terms of employment, but would better reflect the role of these state line lecturers (who are already voting members of their departments and larger faculty and are protected by academic freedom like other faculty). Some at the university would like to convert these lines into tenure lines--but that is a more long term and less likely prospect.
