  • Any news?
  • I'm a postdoc in the department working closely with a high ranking memeber of the department. They have a shortlist already. They may have already contacted them for campus interviews. Big names on the list. If you're not already tenured or tenure tracked; I doubt you've made the list. [posted ~ 12/24]
  • skype interview request 12/23 -- do you know how long the shortlist is?
  • (postdoc from above): I don't know. I can ask on the 3rd (1/3/17)
  • Did you happen to ask? Thanks!
  • Hey, sorry that I haven't been on here in a while. Wanted to gather more info. The 'short list' is about 8 candidates right now, all have been skype interviewed. Not all are tenured or tenure track, but most are. The department is having a hard time narrowing the list to 3 to invite for campus interviews. Sounds like they have split into camps based on research interests. They *might* find money to invite a 4th candidate. Sounds to me like this is going to be a very long and challenging process, but if you are going to be invited for a campus interview, expect to have heard by now, or in the coming week.
  • campus interview invite 1/25
  • rejection email 2/3 (x2) -- curious, did they end up inviting 3 or 4?

University of Washington - Post-Doctoral Openings - Deadline: Early Decision January 31, 2017; Cut-off date: March 1, 2017[]

The NIH T32 Genetic Approaches to Aging Training Grant expects to have four post-doctoral openings in Spring 2017.

The goal of our program is to train new independent investigators who will utilize molecular and genetic techniques to investigate the biology of aging. The objective this research is to elucidate the basic mechanisms underlying the process of aging and age-related changes in humans and in animal models of human aging. This includes investigations of the mechanisms responsible for the gradual or programmed alterations of structure and function that characterize normal aging, as well as how these adverse changes become risk factors for, or accompany, age-related conditions and disease states.

Enthusiastic, independent postdoctoral researchers will have the opportunity choose from among our 36 faculty of researchers using a broad range of approaches and diverse model systems to study the basic biology of aging. See our Curriculum page for more information

The UW is a recognized leader in aging research with an extremely rich environment for aging-related science. The School of Medicine is home to one of only five NIH funded Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging, as well as NIH Centers of Excellence for research on Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease and the newly launched Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute (HALo). In the past five years, approximately 70 UW Faculty have been awarded individual investigator grants from the National Institute on Aging, totaling more than $120 million dollars awarded. These resources have created a strong foundation and have allowed us to make dramatic progress in understanding the basic mechanisms of aging.

Seattle is a world-class city located in the Pacific Northwest with exceptional livability, cultural and recreational opportunities. For more info on Seattle...

Openings and Deadlines: Positions open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. Other eligibility requirements must be met, please see the application procedures for a full list of eligibility requirements.

Applicants must contact the faculty members(s) with whom they are interested in working and secure an invitation to join the lab (which maybe contingent on acceptance into the Genetic Approaches to Aging Training Grant) prior to submitting an application to the Training Grant. A letter of recommendation from your proposed research advisor and a description of the proposed work is required as part of the program application.

In scoring applications we take into consideration the qualifications of the applicant and the mentoring environment, as well as how the research specifically relates to the biology of aging. Funding is at standard NIH stipend levels.

The University of Washington is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.

  • While applications are considered on a rolling basis, the early decision deadline is January 31st. The application cut off date for this Spring is March 1, 2017. The expected start date would be May 1, 2017 and we generally encourage applicants to make their submissions as soon as possible.

Discussion / Rumors / Speculation[]

  • Noticed a few ABDs looking for jobs. How common is that? I'm just lurking this year.
  • Why are there half the people on here as previous years? (past few years were 55ish...)
  • A lot of users don't bother to fill in demographics... there are most certainly more using this site than are listed above (and that will go up when more deadlines pass and interviewing really kicks in...)
  • Why is the AAA's position that letters of recommendation should not be requested until a candidate has made it through the first selection round still being ignored? It was very annoying as a graduate student to have to pester my letter writers so often, and now as someone with a tenure-track position, I would prefer not to make my search for a new job so public before I am even being considered for the position.
  • Because the universities know they can ask for them, and people with do it? If the AAA wanted to help, they could refuse to post any jobs that require LoR up front.  And yet they have posted plenty that violate their position. *sigh* I'm in the same boat, so I empathize.
  • It costs money to advertise on their site, Thus, they have a financial incentive to post the ads regardless of their recommendations.
  • Sometimes it's HR rules, not the department. If the requests aren't automatically sent, I usually email the department to ask if I can submit the refs after they've reviewed my materials. Usually they are amenable.
  • On the surface that might be true, but in the background they wonder why you think the rules dont apply to you. I recommend you follow the instructions laid out in the ad and do not try to deviate from them.
  • If your letter writers want you to be successful, then they will understand. Most just make slight modifications to letters they have already written and submit them. Dont sabotage your career by being afraid to ask for letters of recommendation. I agree they shouldnt be needed until you are being considered, but unfortunately sometimes they are required up front. Most people who write letters take pride in being able to help place the individuals they write letters for into a TT position.
  • I keep telling myself it's early yet, but the picking seem slim so far this year...any rumors on positions that might become availble?
  • - I feel the same. I've heard rumors about primatology-focused positions at Miami of Ohio and Wash U
  • Its slim every year. The job market has been awful in Anthropology for a long time. It is time for the PhD factories to reduce incoming cohorts to single digits.
  • Did anyone apply to the California Academy of Sciences job? Hear anything?
  • Shortlisted candidates contacted 12/30 (x2)
  • Although being short listed is not a guarantee of being interviewed, according to the email. I read 'short list' as a traditional long-list. Good luck to all!
  • no word yet?
  • Has anyone heard anything about interviews now that it is early Feb?
  • Received email on 2/17 saying that they have now selected finalists to be invited for interviews. These interviews will only take place in May apparently (x2).
  • Does anyone know if this search ended up selecting junior people or more senior finalists?
  • Did anyone hear if these interviews were ever scheduled?
  • They are scheduled for early May
  • Any news on these interviews?
  • Anyone have updates on the College of Charleston position?  Not sure why it isn't listed on this site.
  • Skype interviews scheduled 12/9 (to take place next week)
  • FYI--you could edit the wiki and post it.
  • Any word on the Texas State University job?
  • Anyone heard anything about the AMNH's RGGS postdocs (or, any idea if they've contacted people yet)?
  • Anyone know the status of the University of Tennessee Research Associate position?
  • heard that 2 post doc positions were offered (4/1)
  • Anyone know about the visiting position at Dickinson College? It isn't posted here.
  • Interviewed with them, but didn't get a campus visit. I know the position has been filled though.
  • There are a bunch of visiting positions in anthropology at University of Santa Clara. Has anyone heard anything?
  • Any rumors about positions for next year?
