  • Does anyone know the teaching load in this department?
  • CSUCI, like other CSU's, is a 4-4 load, and chances for course releases are increasingly slim. Plan on teaching 4-4.
  • Cal State schools are usually 3-4 or 4-4, but new junior hires can sometimes negotiate course releases.
  • Plan on teaching a 3/3.
  • Plan on teaching a 3/3 for the first two semesters, if you negotiate course releases, then 4/4. CSUs are mostly all 4/4.
  • Note that during the application process (which is, as most HR based applications are, super annoying), the process will also ask you to provide answers to the following four question. "Please explain how your career exemplifies the teacher-scholar model." "Please describe your experience with and commitment to interdisciplinarity including what it means to you." "Describe one innovative idea that you implemented that enhanced student learning or success, and why you think it was so successful." "Please describe your commitment to working with diverse populations, including how you would define "diversity."
  • I also found that frustrating!  If the school needs answers to those questions, perhaps they should tell applicants to prepare them ahead of time.  Or, better yet, if an on-the-fly answer is required, keep them for the interview process.  It's good of you, previous poster, to inform our competitor-comrades of this. :-)

  • Apply at: https://psu.jobs/job/65515
  • Review begins: 1 Sept. 2016 and continues until the position is filled.
  • Received application acknowledgement email on September 23.
  • Is this a real job or advertisement for a green card application? Didn't they hire two people back in 2013? (August 23)
  • First question is obnoxious, and implication of latter option is unclear (xenophobia?). They do have two SAsianists listed as faculty members, and Mrinalini Sinha was there until a few years back. This is a large department full of serious scholars, and no reason to doubt validity of search absent evidence.
  • Question was not meant to be obnoxious -it was just a query - so please don't jump to unnecessary conclusions and make such statements(Xenophobia - how does that even apply?)!  I have applied to searches which were fake in that they were created to accommodate previous hires with their paperwork. It is a waste of effort on the applican's part. Given that most universities don't have two South Asian historians on their roster, their post for a third South asian historian seemed like a valid topic to discuss.
  • [25 Oct] Received email stating that an offer has been accepted
