California Institute of Technology[]

  • Tenure-track position in Asian History at the assistant professor level, beginning fall 2015.
  • Appropriate specialties include (but are not limited to) Chinese History, Japanese History, and South Asian History, in any period.  We are seeking highly qualified candidates who are committed to a career in research and teaching. The term of initial appointment is normally four years, and is contingent upon completion of the Ph.D.
  • Interested candidates should apply electronically: click here to submit an electronic application. Candidates unable to apply electronically may send a letter of application describing their current research, a vita, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample (maximum 25 pages) to: Chair, Asian History Search, HSS 101-40 Caltech, Pasadena, CA 91125.
  • Deadline date for applications is November 15, 2014, but consideration of applications will begin upon receipt.
  • Any news?
  • I'm also wondering the same thing -- this wasn't a posting that was advertised on H-Asia or any of the usual places; Caltech did a really poor job of publicizing this search...
  • I'm pretty sure it was on H-Net, though it doesn't seem to be there now. In any case, that's the only place I normally look and I found it. I've been asked for further materials.
    • I'll be more than glad to be corrected, but I 1) don't remember it being posted on H-Net, 2) the ad doesn't seem to exist anywhere (H-Net, AHA and CHE where I've checked) and 3) I got to know this job ab simply because of a email forwarded to me by one of my profs. My bet is that they deliberately did not publicize this on purpose. Of course, who knows (or will ever know?)... That said, I've also been asked for further materials 12/1 with a note of "We would like to receive this additional material by December 4 at the latest."
    • x2 re: being asked for additional writing samples by Dec. 4th at the latest, and re: the job being very narrowly publicized (I think I found it one or two days before the deadline and can't even remember where).
  • Any news?
  • Interview request (12/16) (x2)
  • Two candidates were invited to campus for interviews in January (1 postdoc and 1 asst. prof.) (3/15)

Columbia University (USA: NY) - History of the US in East Asia [Open Rank][]

  • Tenure track assistant professor through full professor for the Borg Professorship in the History of the US in East Asia
  • Defined broadly as international history involving the United States in East Asia, the field includes the history of US-East Asian relations, comparative history, and other transnational approaches to American and East Asian history. A senior appointment will occupy the Dorothy Borg Professorship in the History of the United States and East Asia. Junior candidates may become candidates for the chair at some later date. Because this position is intended to cross conventional national borders of historical specialization, we hope to attract candidates whose scholarship ventures beyond the binational relations between the United States and an Asian country. Scholars working in comparative and transnational history are particularly welcome to apply, as are those specializing in the broader history of American-East Asian and American-Southeast Asian relations.
  • Inquiries about the position should be addressed to the chair of the search committee, Professor Charles Armstrong, at cra10@columbia.edu. • Thank you for your prompt reponse. I thought all the rejections for the first round were out at the same time. If not, then what were the requests for more materials for? First time on the market, so much to learn!
  • I just received a notification for the rejection, somewhat later than the others. Curious. (11/18) x2 (perhaps the committee met again, and we were quickly eliminated in round 2?)
  • I haven't received any correspondence. But with 140 applications, I imagine they won't be able to send out all the rejection emails in one day... (11/18)
  • Well...I don't really see why not, if it's a form letter (and it definitely is). The administrative assistant is sending it out, but it wouldn't be hard just to cut and paste 140 times...
  • Mail-merge function with e-mail client should let you send 3000 emails in 10 minutes... but then again, this is the department that asked us all to send paper copies of our apps. Well, at least they have the courtesy to inform us of our status, which I appreciate.
  • I haven't received any response yet. Anyone like me? (11/21)

    • Any news? (10/12)
    • Four candidates invited for job talks (10/14)
    • Who was invited? ABDs? Mid career? Senior scholars?
    • 1 abd, 2 recent phds, 1 still junior but out for a number of years. all the names are public and have been emailed around CEAS and published. so 3/4 on the market recently or very regularly, 1/4 new face.
      • [11 Nov] Mod note: Hi all.  Please don't post the names of potential candidates unless they have been made publically available (i.e. not via the rumour mill), or you have the individual's permission (or are the individual!); this is in accord with the wiki's T&C about data protection and personal privacy.  I also want to draw your attention to the note I posted above about the fractious nature of the Asian History page. For more general discussion, the Talk page associated with this page, or the general Venting page may be more appropriate - but please be careful that you do not break the wiki's T&C. Thanks.  AFII (talk) 15:02, November 11, 2014 (UTC)
        • Hi Moderator--thank you for your work on this page. I won't say the names here, but they have all been made public and published by Yale itself (or CEAS at Yale) which has emailed them out to public lists, and not through the rumor mills. Anyone who wants to know the names can just go and sign up to CEAS list and get archived emails, it has names, titles, times and so on and so on.
        • [16 Nov] Thanks for this detail.  A similar issue arose with a job at Cambridge, UK in the 2011-12 season, and the result of complaints was that 1. the Department concerned locked down its email archive and 2. the consensus seemed to be that a closed email list was not a completely public space - so it's OK to point to the source of the information, but not OK to make it googlable and visible by reposting it here.  That seemed like a good compromise between info & privacy, so that should work here too. AFII (talk) 13:34, November 16, 2014 (UTC)
      • Lets be honest. Yale will go COLUMBIA all the way.
      • You must not know Yale's tastes very well. Considering that some of the people they were targeting initially didn't apply, given the current list, there's an 80% or higher chance they go for [name removed - see above]
      • Who were they initially targeting, assuming you actually know what you're talking about?
      • Frankly, I am sick sick sick of this Columbia nonsense. It's preposterous. Senior faculty have noted your shenanigans. You are a shame to us all. We should be better and have higher standards. Go dump your dumpings elsewhere!
      • You can delete the name all you want, but that does not erase Columbia's total dominance of the field. (I am not the above poster.)
      • Thanks Moderator! We should all try and be professional, adult, and a little bit more human. Everyone is trying to get a job. Let's hold hands about it. But if you do want to post more mean spirited stuff, maybe include your own name so we all know what a terrible colleague you'll make.
      • It appears that this is a typical search that shows how some IVY and like-minded schools reproduce their own "inner-circle." I am very curious about whether they even took a look at applicants' writing samples and other documents. Selecting 4 finalists from nearly 100 or more applications just several weeks after the deadline without phone, Skype or AHA interviews simply doesn't make sense. That's why some folks here make the point that only some "inner-circle" people are considered for these jobs. (refer to the Princeton South Asia position) My general suggestion: if you don't think that you belong to this chosen group, do not waste your time for these unrealistic jobs.
        • Actually this is not the case. There was a small group applying for this job, maybe better to say numbering in dozens than 100. And all the writing was read and in a very strict and excellent process.
        • Is it also so hard to believe that, because these "inner circle schools" are much more selective at the admissions stage, they also have a statistically superior likelihood of producing top PhDs?  Having read quite many dissertations over the years, those produced by Yale, Princeton, Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, etc. do seem to be generally of somewhat higher quality.  Not that other schools don't produce great dissertations, but that the median is higher at these places, and the supply of high level dissertations is more consistent from year to year.  This could have been just one of those years, whereas the previous two years (see the finalists for the Harvard, Princeton, Chicago, Duke, and Toronto openings, for example) were not quite as "inner circle" dominated.
      • Okay. as a Columbia student, I apologize for all these idiots who are claiming to represent our school. And to the idiots who are doing this-- you are embarrassing us all and please shut up. Thank you
      • This ^ above poster seems right. THank you.
    • Dear Yale: Don't feel bad, this was your first time searching for a 20th C person. Takes me back to the first time I was searching for a quarterback. I'll admit it, I was in over my head. Hire Tebow, they said. He's got a few nifty tricks, they said. He's a really nice guy, they said. Tune out all the negative chatter, they said. Don't listen to your gut, they said. What's the worst that can happen, they said. Well, you know what, took a few years, but I'm in a much better place. Change of scenery, raising horses, time with my kids, sitting back with a nice hot chocolate. So get some perspective, look in the mirror and give yourself a big hug, we all love you, it's just a game.
    • Whatever our personal thoughts about this, before this escalates into another wiki war, let's all reflect on the fact that the hiring committee has vastly more information than any outsider has, and knows their specific hiring needs better than anyone else--which should give us pause about mouthing off.
    • Mod note: please take any extended/general discussion to the Talk page or The venting page. Thanks. AFII (talk) 08:27, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
    • Offer made and accepted (1/22), Area of research Cultural Revolution

  • Notification that the search would be re-advertised to emphasize need for secondary field outside of East Asia "since the pool of qualified applicants was extremely small." Told me I didn't have to re-apply...that doesn't sound good :)  12/19
  • Search insider here: I'm replying to the previous comment; actually it is good, for you. If you're being notified today that you're being kept in the pool and don't need to reapply, you are one of the very small group that met our advertised criteria. Unfortunately that number is too small for us even to conduct phone interviews. So we need to re-advertise. Also unfortunately, today is the day the College closes for the holidays, for two weeks. We lose our admin support in a few hours, so we can't readvertise until January, and we may not even be able to notify the "rejected" candidates until then. We're trying to keep applicants informed and treat you all decently, but the timing is a problem. 12/19
  • I see...thank you for the update!

  • What about the previous applications? Are you still going to consider them? or people have to re-apply?

South Asia[]

Bridgewater State University (USA:MA) - Sub-saharan or South Asian[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in sub-Saharan or South Asian History
  • See full posting (link above) at African/Middle East History 2014-15
  • second (or possibly third) year in a row for same position - anyone know if this is a legitimate search?
  • No specific knowledge about the above question. I have just one observation:  8 faculty in the Department of History and Political Science. 7 are men, 1 woman.  One of the men is Political Science, one "Global Studies, so if you want to be specific to History, that's a 5:1 ratio of men to women.  That's a red flag for me.
  • Question: Ph.D. in History vs. Ph.D. in History or related field (i.e. interdisciplinary degree, etc.). How serious or intentionally narrow are they when they say "Ph.D in History" and don't add "or related field"?
  • The ad makes it clear that they're looking for a Ph.D. in history. They definitely did not run this search last year, at least not for South Asia. Not sure where that information is coming from. Also, make sure you're looking at the right website. The history department has 15 faculty members (all of whom are historians, no poli sci), and I see five female faculty.
  • Any news ?
  • Phone interview scheduled for mid-Jan. (12/19)
  • What happened to this position? Have they already chosen someone?
  • I had a phone interview, and have heard nothing. I just assumed I didn't make it to the on-campus stage. (x2)
  • Was an offer made? (2/24)

Participation in the Columbia College Core Curriculum will be expected. The appointment at the rank of assistant professor will begin July 1, 2015.
  • Applicants should submit a c.v., cover letter, dissertation abstract, representative sample of scholarship, and a sample course syllabus. They should also arrange to have three referees submit letters of recommendation.

Fairfield University (USA:CT) - South Asian/Indian Ocean[]

  • Tenure track assistant professorship in South Asian/Indian Ocean history to start Sept. 2015
  • PhD must be in hand by 1 sept. 2015
  • "We welcome applications from historians specializing in any period or region of South Asia/Indian Ocean cultures and empires.  We particularly welcome candidates who employ cross-disciplinary or subaltern methodologies, who take broad comparative or transnational approaches, or who explore South Asia/Indian Ocean’s connections to Africa, the Islamic World, and East Asia.
  • A successful candidate will be expected to teach the core-curriculum introductory History survey “Origins of the Modern World, 1500-present” and to contribute actively to the university’s Asian Studies and International Studies Programs
  • Fairfield University, founded in 1942, is an independent Jesuit comprehensive university
  • Applications, including your application letter, statement of teaching philosophy and research interests, curriculum vitae, graduate transcript and contact information for three references should be submitted at:http://fairfield.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=52877
  • Deadline: 1 Nov. 2015 (for interviews at AHA)
  • Intend to interview at the AHA
  • Has anyone heard anything about this position? (11/19)
    • Nope, nothing yet. (11/19)
  • Received email for AHA interview. Looks like there were ~19 slots, but not sure if that means 19 interviews, which is a whole lot. (11/20)x2
    • Status: ABD, TT, non-TT? Was there any additional request for info?
      • ABD, no additional info requested.
  • Rejection via email (11/21)
  • Any news after the AHA interviews?
    • Nothing so far. (1/9)
    • They said they would let us know on Friday, correct? (1/9)
      • Guess I missed that bit of info. I remember being told that the timeline for campus visits is late-Jan to Feb. Followed by the always awkward promising "hope we can continue this conversation some (unspecified) time in the future...."
      • They were suppose to make a decision by Friday.  Anybody invited for campus visits?
      • I don't remember being told that either, but instead told about the future campus visit schedule. I was interviewed on the first day, so perhaps they did not tell that to candidates until later dates? Or perhaps they plain forgot.
    • Email request for on-campus interview (1/13)
    • How many candidates were called to campus? (1/25)
      • Grapevine says 3 candidates, but not certain. Also not sure if any other candidates have been contacted yet (but I haven't). 3+ weeks of no contact after AHA is rather poor form.
      • There were four slots for campus visits, but that doesn't necessarily mean there are four on-campus interviews. It's common for schools not to contact AHA/Skype interviewees until they've gone through the campus interviews in case they want to pull the "next on the list" candidate. Some schools will tell candidates this information - let them know they are an alternate, while others wait. I've waited far longer than three weeks to hear from universities.
      • So, have they already called the 3 or 4 candidates for the campus interviews?
      • Yes final three candidates are currently on campus or have had their on-campus interviews.
      • Was an offer made? (2/24)
      •  Offer must have been made by now.
      • No word yet. But they could have offered the position to someone else. (2/27)
      • Any word on an offer? (3/6)
      • Offer made and accepted, Cambridge PhD

  • Review begins: 1 Oct .2014 but continues until the department chooses to close the search.
  • Has anyone managed to upload the required documents on to the job portal? I get nothing but system errors.
  • Yes, but I was having trouble at first too. Search coordinator said a lot of people were having problems with the online system.
  • So how did you fix the problem? Is there someone I should contact?
  • Contact information for Princeton HR / Staffing may be found here: http://www.princeton.edu/hr/faq/employment/ (10/11)

  • yes people invited for job talks.
  • Three candidates invited for job talks. 2 ABDS and one recent JD/PhD from Harvard.
  • Are the other two candidates also  from Ivy League schools?
  • At least one is.
  • Both are.
  • all three are
  • Not surprising though. It would be better if in the job ad it is clearly stated that only candidates from Ivy League schools will be considered !
  • How unethical.  What a shame.
  • What are the research areas of the chosen candidates? (11/11)
  • all 18th century
  • Who got the job?
  • Job talks are not done yet. (12/4)
