  Yes -- I received mine yesterday. I emailed the dept. chair about it and whether it might indicate that they may still want to schedule an interview with me. I received an even stranger response that interviews at AHA were all scheduled but that "the search continues" -- I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would send detailed position info to people whose applications they have already cut. Salt in the wound? Very strange. (x4) I did not even get a response when I e-mailed the chair after receiving the position description, very bizarre. ---Maybe an administrative error? (Such as-- someone emailed the description to the whole email list and not just the interviewees?)

Do they make any differences in selection process based on the country of origin or whether one is a US citizen or not? I thank you so much for your further input.

-The comment above about this being a "job posting" for "visa purposes" doesn't make sense. According to USCIS regulations covering the granting of permanent resident status to highly skilled workers, it is correct that such an applicant would have to have skills or assets that could not be found easily--i.e. such an applicant would not be replacing a native worker. In many industries, it is indeed accepted practice in the rare cases that a current employee's international status is being converted to permanent residency, that a loyal employer would post such an ad (written in an extremely specific manner tailored to current employee). Except this is completely unnecessary and happen in academia. The academic job process, by definition, picks a uniquely qualified individual from an enormous pool (at least N. America) for the position. Legally and logically speaking, no additional documentation would need to be provided to the USCIS. In the cases that I am familiar with, no additional 'fake search' or 'double ads' were necessary.

I have been in this country (USA) for the past ten years and i have my children here as the native US citizens. I am applying for the academic jobs and waiting for the interviews too. - I am an international student as well and my phone interview has been recently CANCELLED simply because I am holding an F-1 Visa. (They told me that applicants must be eligible for working in the US "permanently,") So, your non-native status might make a difference in some cases.

I think we can say that we will be eligible to work, first through OPT and then permanently, when the university sponsors us. That this does not happen in academia is completely UNTRUE. It happens, and has happened, even within the UW system. I know of one recent case at another campus. Does it not strike any one as odd that the person they hired as a historian of modern south Asia last year fits the current job description? I agree with the posters above. There is something fishy going on here. It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out.
