LEHIGH UNIVERSITY. The Department of Sociology & Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Anthropology, effective Fall 2022. Potential candidates must have a strong record of empirical research in bioarchaeology as evidenced by peer review publications and/or external funding. We will consider candidates with topical specializations within bioarchaeology that focus on humans or hominins. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a vigorous research program and teach introductory anthropology courses, including human evolution and archeology, as well as advanced courses in their area of interest. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to partner with interdisciplinary programs across campus. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in anthropology completed by the effective starting date of employment.

University of Pittsburgh, Assistant Professor, Archaeology of Africa, Asia, or Latin America (Due Nov. 5, 2021)

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-stream Assistant Professor position in Anthropological Archaeology to begin fall 2022, pending budgetary approval. Applicant must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field at the time of appointment. We seek a candidate with a regional focus either in Africa, Asia (including East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia), or Latin America. We seek a candidate who is committed to rigorous empirical research on themes of broad resonance that connect to clusters of interest across the department and the university, including one or more of the following: a) historical ecology, political ecology, environmental sustainability and the Anthropocene; b) culture contact, colonial and post-colonial legacies, and engagement with descendant communities; c) urbanism and the growth and workings of cities through time; and/or d) well-being, human experience, and inequality. Methodological areas of expertise are open but should add to and complement existing strengths in our department.

Candidates must have an active research program that provides opportunity for the integration and training of students. Augustana University, Sioux Falls SD Archaeology Lab Director (Deadline Sep. 24, 2021)

Augustana University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is seeking a full time Director to oversee all operations of the Augustana University Archeology Lab, a financially independent entity established on the Augustana campus in 1982. The Director should think creatively in seeking revenue avenues for the Archeology Laboratory in addition to directing archeological research, cultural resource management (CRM), and historic preservation projects. This position provides an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to build upon a well-established small University-based cultural resource management lab.


The Director is expected to exceed the minimum standards for a professional archeologist as defined by the Secretary of the Interior (36CFR66). Applicant must have CRM experience and a successful history of grant and/or proposal writing as it pertains to funding a CRM office. Individuals in this capacity must have a variety of management and academic skills, and will be expected to conduct major research projects, including preparing proposals and research designs, planning project logistics and managing budgets, supervising staff, both fulltime and student, working with multidisciplinary research teams, and writing and editing CRM finding reports as well as other technical reports.


Necessary skills include:

  • Ability to lead research on professional topics and perform cultural resource surveys and inventories.
  • Develop and provide National Register eligibility and management recommendations for identified cultural resources.
  • Ability to consult on development of Programmatic Agreements and Memoranda of Agreement and Understanding with federal and state agencies.
  • Fully conversant with NHPA Section 106 compliance procedures.
  • Knowledge of how to apply the National Register criteria for evaluation (NR Bulletin 15) and how to complete the National Register Registration Form and the National Register Multiple Property Documentation Form (NR Bulletins 16A and 16B).
  • Knowledge of GIS technology, data collection, illustration of findings and related topics.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and synthesize scientific information from research, monitoring, resources management actions, and other sources of information to solve management challenges of historic resources.
  • Ability to assist with Tribal consultation.

University of Oklahoma, Barnett Family Professorship in Classical Archaeology (Deadline Oct. 15, 2021)

The Department of Classics and Letters at the University of Oklahoma is searching for a dynamic scholar, teacher, and leader to serve as the inaugural Barnett Family Professor of Archaeology and Director of a revitalized Center for Mediterranean Archaeology and Civilization in the College of Arts and Sciences. The position will include tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The teaching responsibilities for the position include two courses per semester. The Department seeks an archaeologist committed to interdisciplinary methodologies in research and passionate about teaching classical archaeology. The Department seeks to hire a scholar with research interests in environment, health, ancient economies, urbanism, or landscape archaeology. Specialists of any period from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity are welcome to apply. The Barnett Family Professor will be expected to lead active projects that allow OU students to gain field experience in Mediterranean archaeology on a regular basis. The Department also seeks a scholar who is a builder and collaborator to join a collegial, high-achieving team committed to teaching the Classics and enhancing the reputation of the University. University of Haifa: Archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Levant and Neighboring Regions

Call for Applications – Tenure-Track Position

The School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures (SAMC) at the University of Haifa, Israel, invites applications for a tenure track position in the Archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Levant and neighboring regions, starting in October 2022. The newly established SAMC comprises the Departments of Archaeology and Maritime Civilizations with two new departments planned to be established within three years – Archaeological Sciences and Preservation, Heritage and Museology in Archaeology.

We are seeking candidates with proven academic excellence in their fields of expertise. Specifically, we are looking for candidates with strong background in the archaeology of the Levant, including the Northern Levant, and the archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean, as well as projects involving archaeological sciences.

Applicants must have a Ph.D., with publications in prominent refereed journals and (preferably) post-doc research. They must demonstrate excellence and originality in research and proven experience in grant applications and field projects. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the equivalent of 16 credits per year, including undergraduate and graduate-level courses. In principle, the language of teaching is Hebrew; non-Hebrew speakers will be allowed to teach in English for a limited period. The candidate will be expected to supervise theses and carry usual nonteaching duties. Affiliation with a relevant department in the SAMC will be decided in a later stage.

Position Announcement

The University of Oregon, Department of Anthropology announces a 1.0 FTE tenure-track position in archaeology at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall term 2022. We seek an anthropological archaeologist with a focus on Western North America and preference for a candidate with a record of effective, culturally competent collaboration with Native American tribal nations and a demonstrated experience or ability and interest in teaching department offerings in cultural resource management. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a rigorous, fieldwork and/or laboratory based, externally-funded research program as well as teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, the Department of Anthropology invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship position beginning August 1, 2022. The fellowship offers a stipend of $55,000/year.

Applicants should be sociocultural anthropologists or archaeologists whose research and teaching demonstrate a commitment to anti-colonial, abolitionist, and/or activist practices. Geographical area of specialization is open. Topical interests might include, but are not limited to, entangled processes of racialization; alternative or diverse economic formations; land, sovereignty, and rural politics; indigeneity; and emerging forms of political action. The department is particularly interested in scholars who embrace its commitment to multimodal, collaborative, and community-based approaches to research and pedagogy. Scholars whose work involves indigenous politics, social justice, or mutual aid coalitions and/or contributes to interdisciplinary conversations in the environmental or rural humanities will receive especially close attention.

The successful candidate should be prepared to teach two courses per year, including one lower-level and one upper-level course.  Lower-level courses will be small and may involve some form of community-engaged learning, potentially in coordination with existing campus initiatives such as the Office for Engagement Initiatives, Rural Humanities, the Underground Railroad Project, or the Prison Education Program. Upper-level courses should explore one or more of the core areas of theoretical and methodological concern described above. These courses should be conceived of as seminars and can reflect the fellow’s particular research interests.
