Allegheny College - Assistant Professor of Arabic
Allegheny College seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Arabic at the assistant professor level to begin August 2013. Native or near-native command in Modern Standard Arabic required; knowledge of one or more dialects desirable. Candidates will contribute to Allegheny’s newly developed Middle East and North Africa Studies Program. Field of specialization open. A typical year’s teaching load will include four courses in Arabic and two courses in English in area of specialization; all faculty at Allegheny are expected to participate in delivering college-wide first-year/sophomore seminars that emphasize writing and speaking. American University of Beirut - 2 Jobs - Modern Literature, Islam Thought Literary Dimensions
The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut seeks applicants in the fields of Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory (with special emphasis on prose genres), and Classical Islamic thought in its literary dimensions to begin September 1, 2013.
For the position in Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory, applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, including Western literary theory.
For the position in Classical Islamic thought in its literary dimensions, candidates should be able to design and teach advanced courses in one or more the following areas: Islamic theology and its Greco-Arabic background, Qur’anic and Sufi studies, as well as more basic courses in other fields of classical Islamic thought such as heresiography and classical literary theory.
The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is Modern Standard Arabic, but mastery of English is an essential requirement. A reading knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Arabic grammar and modern Arabic thought to native speakers of Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage and training in modern Western methodologies are essential.
Applicants must have a PhD upon appointment. Rank will normally be at the Assistant Professor level; usual contracts are initially for four years. The department offers BA and MA degrees, and a PhD in Arabic Language and Literature. Assistant Professor of French & Arabic: Loyola University Maryland is currently accepting applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of French & Arabic. This full-time entry-level position will provide tenure-track coverage in the area of Francophone North African literatures. The UM Arabic Program offers an innovative and intensive language and culture curriculum in a semi-immersion environment in which classroom instruction is supplemented by events, clubs, speakers, language partnering, and education abroad. -Knowledge and experience applying counseling and guidance techniques to provide academic advising and related services to undergraduate students at the University/College level including knowledge of State and Federal laws concerning confidentiality of student records.
-Knowledge of academic and administrative organizational structure within a complex higher education university or college structure including related programs, and general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, unit prerequisites, majors and minors). Knowledge and skills to examine and assess college transcripts and compute grade point averages and grade point balances.
-Knowledge of multi-cultural dynamics within a University setting, and the academic environment and pressures encountered by students at a major research university, and of the personal and social problems commonly encountered by college students of all backgrounds.
-Analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to analyze situations, initiate solutions and develop guidelines with coordinating groups and programs, and involving students and student interactions.
-Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, faculty, administrators, alumni and community groups.
-Writing, editing and proofreading skills to compose correspondence and prepare clear and concise summaries.
-Organizational and presentation skills to provide direction in program planning and implementation; and to make presentations in group and public forums.
-Computer skills using a personal PC for word processing, spreadsheets, data processing, and presentation activities.
-Experience developing, organizing and implementing educational programs, workshops or seminars to enhance student development and retention within the Middle Eastern, South Asian, Arab, and Muslim student community.
-B.A. degree in Middle East/South Asia Studies, Higher Education Administration, Counseling and Guidance or related fields.
-Experience working with Middle Eastern, South Asian, Arab, and Muslim students, parents, alumni, community groups, and organizations.
