Bowdoin College (ME) - Assistant Professor of Anthropology (Tenure-Track) Deadline: Sept. 12, 2020

The Department of Anthropology at Bowdoin College invites applications for a tenure-track position in anthropological archaeology at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2021. We seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on historic or prehistoric archaeology.

We are particularly interested in candidates who focus on topics such as colonialism; transnational cultural encounters; circulation of people and goods; alliances, conflicts, and violence; identities and inequalities; and/or material culture, cultural heritage, and ethics. We seek a colleague who will collaborate with us in a program that integrates the subdisciplines of cultural anthropology and anthropological archaeology. We also encourage applications from candidates whose teaching incorporates decolonizing, experiential, issue-based, and/or digital and computational pedagogies.

The ideal candidate will have a geographic specialization in the Americas (North, Central, or South America) or the Arctic-North Atlantic region. We also will consider those candidates whose topical specializations align with the specific areas of interest listed above but whose geographic expertise lies in another region of the world.

North Carolina State University - Assistant Professor of Anthropology (Medical) (Tenure-Track) Review begins October 10, no deadline set.

North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track) appointment as a cultural anthropologist with a focus on medical anthropology to begin Fall 2021. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Anthropology by start date (anticipated 8/16/2021); strong record or promise of research and publication, including potential for obtaining extramural funding; strong commitment to student mentorship. Teaching load is two courses per semester for research active faculty. Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses. While specific research topic is open, geographic area of specialization must lie outside Latin America and candidates should have a strong background in ethnographic research. Priority will be given to candidates who can teach qualitative research methods, anthropological theory, and whose research complements existing program strengths by speaking to topics such as health disparities, environmental and occupational risk, physical trauma, as well as transnational aspects of illness and healthcare. The Anthropology program at NCSU values a holistic approach, and candidates with the ability to reach across sub-disciplinary boundaries are especially welcome.  Formal screening of applications will begin October 10, and will continue until the position is filled.

Position: Full-time (40 hours/week)

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:

The Vermont Folklife Center (VFC), founded in 1984, is a nationally recognized cultural research and education organization that uses ethnography to gain a deeper understanding of Vermont’s diverse communities and to strengthen connections between them. VFC serves Vermonters across the state through four major programs: Archive, Education, Traditional Arts Apprenticeship, Vision and Voice Exhibition. All four programs are grounded in collaborative ethnographic research and documentation with cultural communities in Vermont. VFC builds programs around community grassroots concerns and our partners’ expertise. This method highlights the dignity, insight and potential of all Vermonters in the hopes of contributing to a more equitable, tolerant and inclusive society.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Education is an integral member of the VFC staff whose primary responsibility is to administer VFC’s robust, statewide education programming. The aim of VFC’s education program is to create pathways for Vermonters to see, participate in, and comprehend the transformative power of ethnography as a method for education and social change. The Director of Education will organize and direct programs that teach ethnographic methods and concepts, and provide training and support to Vermonters seeking to undertake their own community-defined, cultural initiatives.

VFC’s Education program plays a central role in supporting the mission and vision of VFC, providing opportunities for dialogue and collaboration between VFC staff, students, educators, families and local communities throughout Vermont. Through this position, VFC seeks to build connections across divides, promote equity, and foster empathy and mutual respect.

A strong candidate for this position is a trained and experienced ethnographer committed to community-based research and education initiatives. While knowledge of traditional arts is an asset, this position particularly seeks a candidate with a strong vision for how ethnography can be transformative for learning and engagement in multiple educational contexts. Accordingly, it encompasses the following duties and responsibilities.

Training

  • Conduct ethnography and digital media workshops for students and instructors in K-12 and higher education settings.
  • Coordinate Summer Institute (1-2 week ethnographic field school).
  • Hold workshops for the general public.

Service

  • Offer fee-for-service consultancies for schools, school districts, community groups, businesses, nonprofits.
  • Provide ad hoc advising/support for educators and other participants in Summer Institute.
  • Carry out original ethnographic fieldwork in Vermont (in coordination with VFC’s research priorities).

Resources

  • Develop lessons, curricula, learning guides for educators and students.
  • Create examples of ethnographic media (audio/podcast, physical and online exhibitions, text, video).
  • Curate and share archival materials.

Network

  • Build and sustain communities of practice among educators, students, folklorists, ethnographers, artists, and media specialists.
  • Maintain existing, and build new, collaborative working partnerships with like-minded organizations and entities.

Administration

  • Supervise one part-time education staff.
  • Participate in long-range program planning and budgeting.
  • Write grants for education programming/operations and statewide ethnographic fieldwork.
  • Promote education programming and education-related web content.
  • Coordinate Internship program.
  • Collaborate with VFC staff on other projects and programs, as needed.
  • Represent VFC in the local, state, regional community and maintain working relationships with relevant regional and national professional associations.

REQUIREMENTS:

PhD awarded by May 2020 or earlier in folklore studies, ethnomusicology, anthropology, or applied anthropology preferred. MA in folklore or ethnomusicology and minimum 7 years professional experience in public folklore or applied ethnomusicology also considered.

  • Professional experience in higher education and/or K-12 education.
  • Demonstrated experience in program or project management.
  • Competency with digital media documentation technology (audio, still image and/or video).
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Must have valid and current driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation.

Essential Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct fieldwork-based ethnographic research projects.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts concisely and effectively to a broad range of individuals, organizations and non-specialist audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce ethnographic texts (e.g. audio, photography, video, visual art, writing).
  • Demonstrated experience in program/project management.
  • Demonstrated ability as an engaging and effective educator.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competency in digital media editing, computer operating systems and website content management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and participate in consensus-based decision making.
  • Capacity to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated productivity and creativity.
  • Competency in meeting diversity, equity, inclusion and access goals in programming and administrative processes.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit for extended periods, travel, and occasionally stand, use hands to feel and hold, and reach with hands and arms.
