Ashoka University (INDIA) - TT Faculty in Postcolonial Literatures

Ashoka University is a private, non-profit university providing an international-quality liberal arts education in India. Our professors are both active scholars and exciting teachers; our students are bright, curious, and very smart. We currently offer a 3-year BA degree, and will also start offering MA and Ph.D programmes within three years. We are looking to fill three positions in the English department: Film Studies, American Literature, and Postcolonial Literatures. All positions are rank open, and we will consider applications for both tenured and tenure-track posts.

For the position in Film Studies, we are looking for a scholar to cover World Cinema with a specialisation in one or more of the following fields: film theory, postcolonial film, contemporary cinema. Interest and expertise in digital media is a plus. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include Film Theory as well as more specialised classes on national/regional/auteur cinema.

The successful candidate in American Literature will ideally be able to cover the historical sweep of North American literature while focusing on one or more of the following areas: slave narratives, trans-Atlantic literature, literature of the Pacific Rim, African-, Asian-, and Latin-American literatures. Interest and expertise in popular culture would be a plus, but is not required. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include a survey course on North American Literature, as well as more specialised courses on theoretical and historical trends in American literature.

The successful candidate in Postcolonial Literatures would ideally be comfortable with a broad sweep of literatures from around the world in addition to focusing on one or more of the following areas: Translation Studies, Subcontinental literatures, African literatures, Francophone literatures. Interest and expertise in Indian vernacular literatures and popular culture is a plus. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include a course on Postcolonial Theories and Texts, as well as classes on Literatures in Translation.

The California State University Dominguez Hills Department of English seeks to hire an Assistant Professor of English whose scholarly focus is post-1900 (with an emphasis on post-1945) British and Anglophone literature. Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: Postcolonial Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Post-modern or Contemporary literature. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in British literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, British literature survey courses from 1832-present, literary theory, world literature, and composition. She/he will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and serve on department, college, and university committees. The normal teaching load is 4-4, with a reduced 3-3 load for the first two years.

The Ideal Candidate: In addition to having a Ph.D. in post-1900 British and Anglophone literature (e.g. Black British, South Asian, African), the ideal candidate will have demonstrated research and/or teaching interests in one or more of the following areas: postcolonial literature and theory, gender and sexuality studies, feminist theory, post-modern and/or contemporary literature, globalization and/or transnational perspectives. These areas of expertise will strengthen the English Department’s efforts to “support, enhance and develop academic programs that culminate in globally relevant degrees,” a central goal of the university’s strategic plan. The college and the English Department are committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusion of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Candidates who are ABD, have recently attained the Ph.D., or have current positions at the Assistant or late Assistant Professor level are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have the Ph.D. complete or nearly complete with a specialization in post-1900 British and Anglophone literature. If the successful candidate is ABD, the completed doctorate must be verified by the end of the first year of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in English or an allied field with a specialization in post-1900 British and Anglophone literature. Demonstrated record of excellent teaching in areas of academic preparation. Professional experience that demonstrates ability to work with and teach non-traditional students. Demonstrated record of administrative service. Teaching experience and/or research emphasis in one or more of the following is desirable: Postcolonial Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Post-modern and/or Contemporary literature. Demonstrated interest in or engagement with composition theory, teaching composition, and/or Writing Across the Curriculum.

The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position in Global Anglophone/Postcolonial Literatures at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning on July 1, 2016. Possible specializations include urban, environmental, gender, queer, migration, transnational, diaspora or translation studies; an additional consideration is the ability to contribute to the College's interdisciplinary programs (such as Africana Studies and Global Islamic Studies) and centers for interdisciplinary scholarship (the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment, the Toor-Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts, the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity). The teaching load includes courses in postcolonial and Anglophone literatures at all levels; introductory courses required for the major, which all members of the department teach; and courses contributing to the College's Connections program. The successful candidate will join an English department with an established commitment to the study of English as a global language. We seek not simply to "cover" additional literatures with this position (although we do require our majors to take advanced courses in World literatures in English as well as British and U.S. literatures), but to unsettle the notion of center and periphery in literary study and to expose the role of language and literature in creating and maintaining power structures. Fordham University (NY) - TT Asst. Prof. of African/African-American Studies - Caribbean History, Literature and Culture

The English program at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, seeks a scholar who can teach literatures of the African diaspora and media studies for a full-time appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2016. Our new curriculum favors comparative, transnational, and transhistorical approaches as well as the study of media in all their forms. In addition to literary studies, the program offers a concentration in creative writing and ample opportunities for students to engage with contemporary writers. Each year the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry series features several readings by nationally known poets, one of whom teaches in residence for a semester. Published since 1965, ellipsis is a student-edited literary journal that features work by emerging and well-known writers from across the country.

Current English faculty specialize in medieval and Renaissance literature, early nineteenth century and environmental literature, Latino and other U.S. minority literature, South Asian literature, film studies, composition pedagogy, poetry, and fiction. We seek a colleague who can complement our strengths by offering additional courses on diverse authors and media. In our teaching, we maintain Westminster College’s commitment to inclusive, supportive, and engaged student learning.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VA) - Postdoctoral Fellowship in African and Other Anglophone Postcolonial Literatures

The Department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in African and other Anglophone postcolonial literatures. We welcome comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to research and teaching. We seek applications from qualified candidates who are at the beginning of their academic careers, having received the PhD no earlier than 2013. The Fellowship is for one year and includes a full-time salary and a research stipend. Individual healthcare is offered through the Office of Postdoctoral Services. The 2/2 teaching load involves undergraduate teaching that may include ENGL363, African Literature, as well as topics courses in the Fellow's areas of expertise. The Fellow will have the opportunity to present research-in-progress in Spring 2017, and to participate in the intellectual life of the department, university, and the Humanities Research Center. A successful candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
