  • Material culture means they will hire a trained art/dec arts historian. This job was cross-listed on the art historian's website, CAA. They've never tenured anyone in this position over the last eighteen years (they've now been through 3 diff people), so I seriously doubt they will hire an alredy-tenured prof. Just a thought. 10/19

Assistant or Associate Professor: Human Geography, Brown University

Brown University’s Urban Studies Program and the Department of American Civilization seek applications from urban social scientists for a joint appointment for a faculty position at the Assistant or tenured Associate Professor rank beginning July 1, 2011. The search is being conducted in collaboration with Brown University’s multidisciplinary research initiative on Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences. Applicants should have a PhD in human geography or a closely related field. We seek a scholar with a strong foundation in spatial thinking and methods and interests in the natural and built environments. The successful candidate will demonstrate research promise and accomplishments appropriate to rank, and be prepared to teach courses on urban issues at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research background should include studies that focus on American cities and that apply an urban perspective to broader issues such as, but not limited to, inequality, immigration, cultural diversity, and labor and social processes. An interest in transnational or comparative urbanism, (for example borderlands, the Pacific Rim and/or China), facility with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, with the planning field, and an interest in extending the use of digital tools to scholarship in the humanities are other favorable attributes. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level should have a PhD in hand or firmly expected by August 2011 and must show promise of significant scholarship and teaching ability. They should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and a copy of important papers. Three letters of recommendation must be received. Candidates for a tenured position at the Associate level should have a demonstrated influence on the profession by their research and publications and a commitment to teaching excellence at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Associate or Full Professor: American Indian Studies, Brown University

Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) announces a tenured position at the associate or full level in American Indian Studies. We are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar with grounding in the humanities or social sciences whose work in the field will contribute to the study and teaching of race and ethnicity at Brown. Of particular interest are applicants whose work includes the study and practice of public scholarship, such as museum studies, ethnographic filmmaking, or public history or anthropology.

The appointment will be shared between CSREA and the department appropriate to the candidate’s educational background and primary field of research, including but not limited to American Civilization (including Public Humanities), Anthropology, English, or History. Appropriate candidates may also be appointed as a curator at Brown’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, a teaching museum with extensive Native collections. We welcome applicants whose research focuses on Native American/ American Indian/Native Alaskan topics. Colby College: American Studies and Integrated Studies Program

The American Studies Program and the Integrated Studies Program (ISP) at Colby College invite applications for a three-year (renewable) appointment beginning September 1, 2011. We seek an Americanist with a specialty in material culture, the built environment, or art, and with a demonstrated teaching ability in gender studies. The position carries a five-course load, with three courses in the American Studies Program and two in ISP. ISP courses are first-year seminars that are team-taught in clusters of linked topics. A Ph.D. in American Studies or other closely related interdisciplinary field is required. The successful applicant will be able to teach core courses in American Studies as well as electives in American Studies and ISP. Having inquired about the status of the search (via e-mail) twice over the past four months and not even receiving an acknowledgement in return, I am extremely disappointed in the behavior of this search committee. It is clear now that they had finalists after ASA, but did not find it necessary to even reply to inquiries from their long list.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in history with a specialization in Native American history, or a PhD in a related field with a specialization in the ethnohistory or history of American Indian societies. The department is seeking a Law and Society scholar to teach primarily, although not exclusively, in the Crime, Justice, Law and Society concentration within the Sociology major. The Anthropology Department and the American Studies Program seek a theoretically-engaged historical anthropologist of the Americas for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor rank with an August 2011 start date. We seek a scholar with an active program of research addressing one or a combination of the following themes: 1) diasporic or indigenous perspectives, 2) materiality, 3) landscape, 4) a focus on political economy and linkages between populations in different areas of the Americas and beyond.
