Boston University invites applications and nominations for a position in American Material Culture in the Art History Department and American and New England Studies Program. Tenured or tenure-track, to begin September 1, 2011 (pending final budgetary approval). Ph.D. required; teaching experience and publications preferred. The successful applicant will teach four courses per year, including undergraduate and graduate courses in American material culture and other appropriate courses in the Art History Department and American and New England Studies Program (refer to websites http://www.bu.edu/ah and http://www.bu.edu/amnesp.) Morgan, Art History Department, Boston University, 725 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 302, Boston, MA 02215

    • Just FYI, an inside source told me they are looking for an already tenured prof for this gig. 10/4.**
    • Q: Thanks for this. Just a general wiki question: what do people think of this info? Will anyone not apply because of it? I was already thinking of not applying because I do american studies/literature and I wasn't sure of the material culture angle. Any ideas?
    • Having written the FYI, I won't apply for this job knowing their parameters. That being said, I wouldn't trust this info if I had merely read it on the wiki- I would apply if I matched the profile. I'd always hope!
    • Material culture means they will hire a trained art/dec arts historian. This job was cross-listed on the art historian's website, CAA. They've never tenured anyone in this position over the last eighteen years (they've now been through 3 diff people), so I seriously doubt they will hire an alredy-tenured prof. Just a thought. 10/19
    • anyone gotten called for an interview at ASA? 10/29
    • I haven't heard anything myself- does anyone have any good news? ASA is looming... (11/3)
    • I know, me either, it is very frustrating! Not sure whether or not to bother attending. Has ANYONE gotten a phone call yet? I've just gotten a letter of ack by mail, October 21. (11/3)
    • Interview request via email last week. Good luck everyone. (11/4)
    • Tel call but did not make the final round on on campus i-views scheduled in early December

Assistant or Associate Professor: Human Geography, Brown University[]

Brown University’s Urban Studies Program and the Department of American Civilization seek applications from urban social scientists for a joint appointment for a faculty position at the Assistant or tenured Associate Professor rank beginning July 1, 2011. The search is being conducted in collaboration with Brown University’s multidisciplinary research initiative on Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences. Applicants should have a PhD in human geography or a closely related field. We seek a scholar with a strong foundation in spatial thinking and methods and interests in the natural and built environments. The successful candidate will demonstrate research promise and accomplishments appropriate to rank, and be prepared to teach courses on urban issues at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research background should include studies that focus on American cities and that apply an urban perspective to broader issues such as, but not limited to, inequality, immigration, cultural diversity, and labor and social processes. An interest in transnational or comparative urbanism, (for example borderlands, the Pacific Rim and/or China), facility with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, with the planning field, and an interest in extending the use of digital tools to scholarship in the humanities are other favorable attributes. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level should have a PhD in hand or firmly expected by August 2011 and must show promise of significant scholarship and teaching ability. They should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and a copy of important papers. Three letters of recommendation must be received. Candidates for a tenured position at the Associate level should have a demonstrated influence on the profession by their research and publications and a commitment to teaching excellence at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and copies of important publications or working papers. They also should suggest the names of at least five distinguished scholars who can provide references. Applications must be received by November 1, 2010, to be guaranteed full consideration but will be accepted until the position is filled.

  • Any word on this one? Never received ack..
  • nope, no word at all as of 12/17. anyone else?
  • Nothing here- though I did hear Brown was conducting interviews. This may have been for the urban sociology search, though.
  • No word as of 12/28. Anyone else? x3
  • Job talks scheduled.

Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) announces a tenured position at the associate or full level in American Indian Studies. We seek an Americanist with a specialty in material culture, the built environment, or art, and with a demonstrated teaching ability in gender studies. Interviews will be conducted in mid-November at the American Studies Association Conference in San Antonio, TX.

  • Received acknowledgement and EEO form (online) 20 October
  • Has anyone heard anything about interviews yet? The American Studies Association Conference is just over two weeks away. I would think they would need to schedule interviews pretty damn soon right?
  • Nothing here (11/3) and the Am St dept at Colby doesn't even answer their phone. WTF?
  • ASA interview scheduled by e-mail, 11/3.
  • Me too.
  • Bummer. I was really hoping for this one. But congrats to all of the interviewees!
  • Had interview 11/19. Has anyone been scheduled for a campus visit in February yet???
  • I haven't heard either. I figure we'll hear before Xmas. Don't they have some kind of weird break for December?
  • Still nothing. Any updates anyone?
  • Does anybody know anything? They are certainly taking their time. (1/20)
  • Never heard back from them after good interview 11/19. Figured I was just not a candidate anymore. Hmmm. (2/8) (x2)
  • Post-ASA rejection e-mail 3/15. Having inquired about the status of the search (via e-mail) twice over the past four months and not even receiving an acknowledgement in return, I am extremely disappointed in the behavior of this search committee. It is clear now that they had finalists after ASA, but did not find it necessary to even reply to inquiries from their long list.

  • interview scheduled at ASA: called in early-ish October (I forget which day)
  • campus visit scheduled following thanksgiving
  • i interviewed, but didn't get a call about a campus visit yet. does this mean i'm out?
  • If the above person has already scheduled a campus visit this likely means that you - and I - are out. We will probably be notified of our rejection by mail in the next few weeks. On to the next frustrating waiting game. Good luck to you.
  • If they interviewed you that is a good sign, they can only hire one. - [not sure I understand the frame of reference/target for this comment]. (Snark is out of fashion, buddy. Trade in your skinnny jeans and get a clue). To play at your game I'll ask what are the brackets for, does your favorite facebook friend use them or twitter pal? You should also use the word problematic, that makes you sound smart. Go write and publish your chapbook, moron! [??? What are you talking about?! Where is all that coming from?!]

American Studies position, any news?

  • Heard they did some phone interviews.
  • I called today (2/23), and they said they were interviewing candidates. I asked if a person who had not been contacted for an interview were out of the running, and they said no one is definitely out yet. But...my opinion is, it doesn't look good for someone like me!
  • Received an EEOC form from them TODAY (5/10/11). Thought that was so weird I checked this wiki for news.

  • For best consideration, apply by 01/14/2011.
  • It looks to me like this description is written for their visitor. Do others agree?
  • I had the same response looking at the website, but am applying anyway.
  • Yes, you should apply ASAP - I heard they are open
  • I hope that's true! If only b/c they asked for a &^(% grad syllabus-- it ticks me off when schools w/inside candidates ask for all kinds of specialized application materials from us. Hopefully there's at least a shot here...
  • Any movement here? I know that the department had a "semi-finalist" list some time ago and asked for letters of rec from those folks by no later than 2/2. I also know UNM was shut down from 2/2 to 2/6 due to the energy crisis in the state. But I'd be interested in knowing if anyone was invited to campus and when.
  • Email rejection (form letter) 2/21
  • Has anyone not received a rejection or campus invite? same here - no rejection or campus invite after notification of semi-finalist status (3/3)

  • Who is the lucky winner? Is it indeed David Correia?

-- anyone hear anything about this one yet? haven't even received acknowledgement of my application yet, sent mid-October (12/7) (x6)

-- I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one who hasn't heard anything! I've also tried e-mailing and calling their department office, but I haven't received a response. From what I can tell, they don't seem to have a full time administrative assistant, since no one ever answers the phone. (12/9)

-- They do have a full time admin assistant (three in fact, though they all have different duties). I know the chair read many apps before Thanksgiving, though I am unsure if (or whe) the committee met. Also, I have not heard back from either, but I do not think anyone has just yet.

--I called today (12/15) and they are still reviewing apps. Most likely not doing interviews at MLA. Gave me a person to address further inquiry. *UPDATE* "There are no plans I'm aware of to interview at MLA. The short, short list of candidates have already been contacted. I do not know if there are plans to inform applicants who are not selected. I hope this helps and thanks for your interest." #wompwomp (12/16)

-- They have already brought out thier finalists for job talks (1/28)

- Has anyone heard who received the offer?

-Juan De Lara, In house Mellon Post Doc received it
