NOTES:

  • I would encourage any prospective candidate to read their mission statement carefully; you'll see what I'm hinting at immediately.
  • "The College values the merit of each unique individual, rather than succumbing to the dehumanizing, discriminatory trend of so called “social justice” and “multicultural diversity,” which judges individuals not as individuals, but as member of a group and which pits one group against other competing groups in divisive power struggles." Wow.
  • That mission statement is alarming. What a garbage college. Here's more: "Hillsdale’s educational mission rests upon two principles: academic excellence and institutional independence. The College does not accept federal or state taxpayer subsidies for any of its operations." This is Evangelical-based libertarianism.  I'd rather work at Barnes and Noble.
  • Rumor has it that Rand Paul is on the search committee.
  • Joking aside, be advised that this college is really INSANELY far to the right; teaching the humanities as they are currently taught in that intellectual environment will prove impossible.
  • But does such a thing as a conservative english department actual exist?

  • 10/29

Request for additional materials: 10/28

  • A request for more materials 2 weeks before the deadline? Do you mind divulging what additional materials were requested? --> Sorry if that was misleading.  It was a request to fill out the institution's on-line application after the hard copy materials were received.
  • 12/4 Request for Writing Sample, Syllabus, Letters of Rec., Statement of Teaching Philosophy.  In the request they sent me they said they got over 600 applications.  x4

Rejection (no interview): 12/11 x 9 (via e-mail); rejection after request for additional materials (via snail mail 12/20). x2 (snail mail 12/21)

  • I understand the HR-Speak required in such emails, but the rejection noted "very specific needs at this time" they were looking for--"needs" that I and many others actually met. If these "needs" were so "specific" and integral, why weren't they better outlined in the original ad?
  • Regarding the above comment: it's a win-win for them, obviously. Keeping the language broad at the outset lets them cast the widest possible net - perhaps they'll catch something they didn't even know they "needed" or stood to gain... But positions are always created with specific needs in mind, even when they go underarticulated in an add. Please don't forget that the university is a kind of corporation, folks!
  • Actually, it's just a template. Just about every job I've ever applied for sent the generic "your CV/research was incredible BUT" blah blah blah "needs" blah blah blah "500 applications." It's just a form letter, it doesn't actually mean anything but "no."
  • ^Agree with both^. The letters are primarily vetted (if not written by) HR, hence the 'nice' way of rejecting 600 or so of us. All schools like this are in a win-win with semi-vague ads: they cast a wide net, see who applies, and then determine what their "very specific needs" are. At least one person I know via Twitter is calling MU and other schools out on their BS regarding job ads.
  • Dude, just the fact that you gave the rejection notice a second thought and are actually trying to close read it for content makes me worry about your mental sanity. It doesn't mean anything. It isn't meant to signfiy. As someone states above: it's just "no."
  • Is there anyone out there who hasn't gotten an invitation to interview OR a rejection?  I was asked for more materials but haven't heard anything since the confirmation that they received them on 12/4, and though I'm speculating that my rejection is in the mail, I'm wondering what's happening with others out there.  What do you think: has the Marymount ship sailed?

Anyone else confused by the directive "include the title "English Department - British Literature" in the subject line" for an American lit position?

  • A: this school is also running a search for a British lit position (see British Open 2014), so I would guess this is an oversight carried over from that ad. It would seem sensible to put "American Literature" in the subject line instead. [12/13]
