Position Description: We seek a generalist with a specialization in American Literature, any area. The successful candidate will teach introductory surveys and upper division courses in American literature, and a course entitled Contemporary Literary Theory. Facility in ethnic and minority literatures, especially Chicano literature, is highly desirable. All faculty in English teach first-year composition. The course load is 4/4. Other duties include student advising and service to the department and college. The successful candidate will create courses in his or her specialty and may help develop the curriculum for a Master’s in Humanities the department is planning. Excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service are required for promotion and tenure. Our collegial department is committed to serving diverse students, many of whom are preparing for teacher licensure.

The English Department at Eastern Connecticut State University seeks a specialist in American Literature and Children's Literature for a tenure‐track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. PhD or ABD in English is required. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach existing introductory and advanced courses in literary studies, composition, and/or creative writing and to develop new courses in line with their teaching and research interests. For this position, the candidate should be able to teach a wide range of American Literature as well as demonstrate a specialization in Children's Literature. The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Literature, beginning fall 2014. Teaching duties include all aspects of the canon in American literature, taught in an intimate, academically intensive learning environment with small class sizes. The Wilkes Honors College, now in its 15th year, is the first Honors College in the U.S. to be built from the ground up. - I understand the HR-Speak required in such emails, but the rejection noted "very specific needs at this time" they were looking for--"needs" that I and many others actually met. If these "needs" were so "specific" and integral, why weren't they better outlined in the original ad?
- Regarding the above comment: it's a win-win for them, obviously. Keeping the language broad at the outset lets them cast the widest possible net - perhaps they'll catch something they didn't even know they "needed" or stood to gain... But positions are always created with specific needs in mind, even when they go underarticulated in an add. Please don't forget that the university is a kind of corporation, folks!
- Actually, it's just a template. Just about every job I've ever applied for sent the generic "your CV/research was incredible BUT" blah blah blah "needs" blah blah blah "500 applications." It's just a form letter, it doesn't actually mean anything but "no."
- ^Agree with both^. The letters are primarily vetted (if not written by) HR, hence the 'nice' way of rejecting 600 or so of us. All schools like this are in a win-win with semi-vague ads: they cast a wide net, see who applies, and then determine what their "very specific needs" are. At least one person I know via Twitter is calling MU and other schools out on their BS regarding job ads.
- Dude, just the fact that you gave the rejection notice a second thought and are actually trying to close read it for content makes me worry about your mental sanity. It doesn't mean anything. It isn't meant to signfiy. As someone states above: it's just "no."

Eidson Distinguished Professorship in American Literature. The Department of English at Beloit College invites applications for a one-year sabbatical replacement in American Literature, Creative Writing and Journalism for 2014-15, with the possibility of a renewed second-year contract. The successful candidate will teach 5-6 courses during the academic year, including introductory and survey courses in American literature, one course in the candidate’s specialty (depending on strengths), and introductory creative writing. Candidates with experience in print journalism and a willingness to teach an introductory journalism course are especially encouraged to apply. Ph.D. preferred. Advanced ABD will be considered.

The Division of Humanities at New College of Florida invites applications to fill a position as Visiting Assistant Professor of English for academic year 2014/15, with strong possibility of extension through 2015/16, to replace a faculty member moving into the administration. New College is a small, highly selective, liberal arts honors college within Florida’s public state university system and located on Sarasota Bay. Teaching load is 2/2 plus supervision of tutorials and direction of January-term Independent Study Projects. Teaching competence in American literature and poetry are essential. We welcome all applications, particularly those that demonstrate scholarly and teaching interest in visual studies, transatlantic literature and culture, or literature of the environment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least two courses that focus on poetry, including an introduction to poetry emphasizing formal literary analysis. New College encourages visiting faculty to develop courses that build on their own scholarly expertise; the successful candidate will be able to offer courses at an advanced or beginning level in areas of their own scholarly interest that serve the larger goals of the English program. English at New College seeks to introduce students to literature of the anglophone world; we expect students majoring in English to demonstrate strong skills in textual analysis, historical approaches, cross-cultural work, and a basic knowledge of applied critical methods and theories. All students at New College produce a senior project, most often a written thesis.
Candidates should demonstrate teaching experience and enthusiasm about working at a small liberal arts college. University College and the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a teaching-stream position in Queer Writing and Culture/American Literature at the rank of Lecturer.
The appointment will begin on July 1, 2014, by which time the successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. He or she will be appointed both to University College (0.60) in support of the teaching mission of the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies and to the Department of English (0.40).
Lecturer appointments are normally annual but may be up to three years. If a Lecturer appointment continues into the fifth year, performance must be reviewed and a recommendation made about promotion to Senior Lecturer. Senior Lecturers have continuing appointments.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates must demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level and a commitment to related pedagogical and professional development both in Queer Writing and Culture and in American Literature. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses from the introductory to advanced levels in both appointing units, and will be expected to have teaching competency in Canadian Queer Culture. Administrative experience is an asset.
