Jobs with 2021 Application Deadlines

Auburn University at Montgomery. Assistant Professor of English (Southern Literature). April 2, 2021.

Auburn University at Montgomery invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English with a scholarly agenda in the diverse literatures, digital and material cultures, and folklores of the U.S. South, to begin Fall 2021. An interest in Black, Asian-American, or Latino southern literatures, or southern sexualities, is especially desirable. AUM has a unique geographical location in Montgomery, Alabama, a Deep South city with a rich African-American and Civil Rights history. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to capitalize on this legacy by contributing to interdisciplinary programming pertaining to the teaching and study of the literary legacy of enslavement, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, Civil Rights, and immigration. Moreover, AUM’s student population is as diverse as the population of the state and includes a high proportion of traditionally underrepresented groups. The successful candidate will share our explicit commitment to teaching diverse communities and our belief that our diversity is our strength. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to create advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization. Teaching in both core composition and literature surveys, particularly both parts of the American literature survey, is expected. AUM hosts an annual Southern Studies Conference to which the successful candidate would have the opportunity to contribute.

AUM has an official 4/3 teaching load for tenure-stream faculty. Faculty with ongoing scholarship and publication usually receive a course release for a normal 3/3 load. Internal funding and professional improvement leave to support scholarship are available.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in English with a specialization in southern literature.

Please complete an online application at https://www.jobs.aum.edu/postings/4643 and upload 1) a cover letter describing your teaching and scholarship, 2) a curriculum vitae including three reference contacts, and 3) unofficial transcripts. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide additional materials, including teaching philosophy describing their approach to teaching diverse populations of students, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and writing sample.

Application review begins April 2, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.

Inquiries to John Havard, Department Chair, jhavard@aum.edu.

Eugene Lang College, The New School University (New York City, NY) Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Assistant Professor in African American Literature (FT/TT). Application opens 19 February 2021. Priority deadline 15 March 2021. However, review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, an undergraduate college of The New School, invites applications from promising scholars in any area of African American Literature. We especially welcome applications from candidates whose research specialties include poetry, democracy studies, gender and sexuality studies, and/or literature and law. The appointment begins with a two-year postdoctoral fellowship during which time the Mellon fellows will develop robust research projects and professional networks, with the option to teach one course in their home department. After the two-year period, the Mellon fellows will move directly into a tenure-track position (in this case as Assistant Professor of Literary Studies). After being appointed to Assistant Professor, they will teach five courses (or their equivalent) per year in areas of their expertise.

Update 2/24/21: Questions may be directed to the search committee chair, Juan Decastro (DecastrJ@newschool.edu). The committee will post updates on the search to this page.

Update 3/17/21: The committee has begun reviewing applications, but we continue to check the website for applications that may be coming in after the priority deadline of March 15.
