Responsibilities:  Teaches 12 credit hours per semester ranging from freshman composition to upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization; advises students; conducts research; serves on department, college, and/or university committees; writes proposals for public and private grants; performs other related duties as assigned. This is a full-time tenure track faculty position that may require teaching in the evenings and/or weekends. The successful candidate will start work at BSU in August 2019.

Qualifications:  Ph.D. in African-American Literature with a focus on Black Diaspora Cultural Studies, or closely related discipline; strong background in film studies and digital humanities is preferred;  minimum of two years of college/university teaching experience; strong peer-reviewed scholarly publication record in area of specialization or strong research potential; demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of specialization as well as composition/rhetoric; knowledge of and experience in developing and evaluating undergraduate and graduate courses and academic programs; demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and university/community service; excellent communication skills; digital information technology skills including Blackboard a must; fluency in other languages is a plus.

University of Missouri-Saint Louis (MO) - TT Assistant Professor of English, African American Studies - ZOOM INTERVIEW STAGE[]

The Department of English at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank in African American studies, to begin in August 2019. The department seeks a scholar-teacher focused on African American literature. In addition to this primary focus, we encourage intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to content and methods, and we welcome commitments to gender studies, queer studies, and transatlantic or global studies. Additional possible areas of expertise may include (but are not limited to): literatures of the African diaspora, ethnic literatures of the Americas, African American rhetorics, new media studies, hip hop studies, and digital humanities.

Candidates should demonstrate evidence of scholarly accomplishment and promise, as well as commitment to teaching that aligns with the University’s mission and core values of access, inclusion, and community engagement. A PhD in a relevant field is required by the time of appointment.

Working in UMSL’s English Department and the College of Arts of Sciences

The English Department’s newly launched undergraduate curriculum facilitates innovative teaching and mentoring. We also feature active MA and MFA programs, with courses at all levels in creative writing, literature, composition, rhetoric, and related fields including linguistics, film studies, gender studies, and disability studies. The department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, which supports collaboration in research, teaching, and service. The College offers a range of interdisciplinary programs, including African/African American Studies, American Studies, Latinx Studies, Gender Studies, and Veterans Studies. College faculty also regularly offer courses through the Pierre Laclede Honors College and the Center for International Studies.

Early career and research-intensive faculty typically teach two courses per semester. In the undergraduate major, these might include upper-level classes in African American studies, surveys in American literature, or other courses in the area of specialization. At the graduate level, teaching would include African American literary or cultural studies, and topical courses based on expertise, research interests, and programmatic needs. The optimal candidate would contribute to our existing degree programs and help the department to develop new offerings.

We seek a colleague whose work is comparative, relational, and interdisciplinary. Position Description. Reporting to the chair of the Literature Department, the assistant professor will teach three courses per semester (with the occasional possibility of reassigned time for research), including upper-division English classes, cross-listed graduate courses, and literature classes offered in the core curriculum. Opportunities to teach interdisciplinary courses in areas such as Africana Studies or Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies may also arise. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and publish peer-reviewed scholarship. Service to the department and University is also required. This will be a joint appointment, with teaching responsibilities split evenly between the Department of African-American and African Diaspora Studies (AAADS) and Latino Studies (LATS), which is housed in the Program of Race, Migration and Indigeneity (RMI). RMI is a pioneering multi-disciplinary unit that investigates the complex social dynamics of race, ethnicity, human movement, and power relationships.
