The Department of English and Foreign Languages at Augusta University seeks a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor specializing in African American literature, to begin August 2017. The successful candidate will teach African American literature courses, which may include the survey, single-author courses, genre- or period-specific courses, or other specialized topics according to the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. Other courses may include first-year composition, humanities, and American literature surveys. This individual must have both a strong teaching record and a promising research agenda. All applicants are required to have a Ph. D. in English or a related field; applications from ABDs will be considered, but Ph. D. must be in hand by start date in August 2017. This position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester.

Berea College (KY) - TT Asst. Professor - African Diasporic/African American Literature - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

Berea College seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the English program. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. (or will complete a Ph.D. by the end of 2017) in Literature, American Studies, or Comparative Literature, and demonstrate experience teaching literatures of the African Diaspora, with a complementary expertise in African-American literature from its origins to the 21st century.   • I knew there was an inside candidate for this position. They were incredibly rude and confrontational during my preliminary interview. They made it clear from the minute I said "hello" that I had no chance. I left the interview with extremely bad perceptions of the department and I'm upset that they wasted my time and money when they already had a candidate lined up.  
  • I also had a prelimary interview--the interviewers weren't rude *at all.* Though they may have had an inside candidate, it didn't feel like there was anything predetermined.

Evidence of teaching effectiveness and potential for successful research, publication, and other scholarly/professional/creative activities required, with publication in the field of specialization desirable.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute both to their chosen disciplines and to the University’s commitment to student success. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees, contribute to teaching effectiveness, and demonstrate successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities in their field of specialization. The standard teaching load is 12 units (4/4) per semester (3/3 for the first two years), although competitive reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development. All faculty in the Department of English teach a variety of classes, including General Education courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialization. The successful candidate for this position will likely be asked to teach surveys of American literature and will be encouraged to develop new upper-level and graduate courses in her/his area of expertise. While all full-time faculty remain eligible to teach lower division writing courses, the majority of these courses are taught by lecturer faculty. In practice, lower division writing courses are only assigned to full-time faculty members with specializations in composition or rhetoric, or to those specifically requesting such courses.

The African American Studies program is a thriving and exciting academic area at the College. It houses the newest major in the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs (LCWA). The Program collaborates curricularly and co-curricularly with key institutional partners, including the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, and the program in the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World. The Program’s core and affiliate faculty cover a range of disciplines across the College.

The Africana Studies Department and the English Department at Davidson College seek to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in African-American literature or the literature of the African Diaspora. Candidate specialization is not limited to, but might include areas of study such as autobiography, colonialism and postcolonial studies, material culture, performance, and visual culture. We encourage applications that situate African-American literature within national and transnational contexts and with attention to class, gender, sexuality, and/ or disability.

Teaching load is four courses in the first year, and five thereafter, and related responsibilities will be shared between Africana Studies and English. The candidate must be able to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in both Africana Studies and English, including literature surveys.

Candidates will be expected to have an on-going research program related to African American or African diaspora literature and publish in the field. Additional responsibilities include academic advising of undergraduates, participation on college committees and departmental tasks, and directing student research.

  • Hi, search committee member here: We DO need 3 letters of recommendation with the initial application.

  • Has anyone actually been interviewed for this job? Or was this an inside hire? I never received rejection nor interview ...
  • I'm also wondering if this was an inside hire. Campus interviews don't normally start until January in English fields. This search was suspiciously quick. They really shouldn't have asked for so many materials up front if they already had an inside candidate. 
  • Rejection email received four days after submission deadline. Final hire announced just over a month past the same deadline. Props to the committee for managing to review all applications, conduct preliminary interviews, conduct campus interviews, and select a candidate in that short time frame. 
  • Congratulations to the successful applicant! I didn't apply, but Davidson is a marvelous catch. 
  • Apparently there was at least one person who got rejected just days after the deadline. More of us (myself included) got rejected just a few days before an offer was accepted (let alone made). I can't speak for the others, but I didn't have an interview before that rejection. But if I'm being rejected just a couple of days before a hire is announced, it doesn't sound like I got tossed out with the first batch. It sounds an awful lot like they went through the process without actually interviewing people...unless someone wants to speak up and say that they did in fact interview. But in that case the schedule of their rejections makes very little sense.
  • I interviewed and to my knowledge they have not made an offer (I have not received a rejection letter). 
  • Looking at the edit history, the IP address that added "Offer Accepted" also made multiple edits aorund the same time, each alleging there were "insider candidates" for other positions; at least one of those edits seems to have been removed. Maybe this person is knowledgable about multiple searches in the field, or maybe there's a bit of trolling going on here. A search committee member posted here earlier in the cycle; if one sees this now, could they confirm/deny whether or not there has actually been a hire? <--Good point! Hopefully someone on the SC can confirm one way or another [11/23]

The Department of English invites applications for a one-year visiting position in African-American Literature at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning on July 1, 2017. We are particularly interested in candidates who also bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: U.S. ethnic literatures, comparative race studies, gender and sexuality studies, hemispheric and oceanic studies, or others. The teaching load includes a two-part historical survey of U.S. literature as well as introductory and advanced courses in African-American Literature. ABD required, Ph.D. preferred by August 2017.

Rutgers University (NJ) - Postdoctoral Fellowship in African American Literature[]

The Department of English at Rutgers University, which has a long history of scholarship and teaching in African American Literature and Literature of the African Diaspora, announces two Postdoctoral Fellowships for scholars pursuing research in these fields.

The Fellowship is for one year and includes a salary of $60,000, health benefits, and a $5,000 research stipend. Each recipient will teach one course, serve as an informal mentor to graduate students in the field, and participate in the intellectual life of the department.

The Department of English at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a one-year Third Century Postdoctoral Fellowship in African-American Studies. This position is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for one additional year, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
