Design and teach upper-division and graduate courses in African American literature and American literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Secondary specialties might include antebellum race studies, ethnic and immigrant literature, literature of the progressive era and transnational American literature. Design and teach lower-division courses, including a survey of American literature, general education courses in literature or first-year composition. Advise undergraduate students. Continuing scholarly activity and active participation in departmental and university-wide professional activities are expected. As Bridgewater State is a teaching university, the usual expectation is a four course responsibility each semester. Research grants and leadership in service initiatives may substitute for teaching responsibilities.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in English with a specialization in African American literature by August 2014. College teaching experience is required.

In addition to developing courses in their field, the successful candidate should be able to teach the English Department’s core African American literature courses, both early and modern black literature. The Department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in African American literature after 1940. We welcome any and all approaches, including but not limited to gender and sexuality studies, performance studies, theoretical and critical literacies, Black Atlantic studies, disability studies, and poetry and poetics. We invite applications from qualified candidates who are at the beginning of their academic careers, having received the PhD no earlier than 2011.
The Fellowship is for one year, and includes a full-time salary and a research stipend. Individual healthcare offered through the Office of Postdoctoral Services. The 2/2 teaching load involves undergraduate teaching, including survey courses in contemporary African American literature, as well as the potential for graduate courses in the Fellow’s areas of expertise. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will participate in the intellectual life of the department, the university, and the new Humanities Research Center. The Fellow will have the opportunity to present research in progress in spring 2015.
