Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Deadline: 28 Sept. 2018.
  • Anyone here experiencing issues with registration on their website? In order to proceed to the actual application, one needs to verify one's email. But no matter how many times I ask for that verification email to be resent, nothing happens. I wonder whether this is just me or what.
  • It is indeed a counterintuitive job portal; I was able to register, but then unable to save the information I entered.  In other words, everyone, don't log in to apply until everything is totally ready to go.  In your case, I hate to suggest the obvious, but have you checked your spam folder?  My verification email originally ended up in there.  If that doesn't solve the problem, you might consider sending an email to the department chair.
  • I had issues with their online system as well. I had to register using a Gmail address not an Outlook address because of the verification issue. Additionally, there is one box in which you can upload your CV, but that is where you are supposed to upload your cover letter as well. They were very helpful in resolving this via email. [Sept. 17]
  • Applied (x1) Rejection email received October.1 (x1)
  • I received a rejection e-mail 3 Oct., which seems to fast, but it also mentioned Furman being my alma mater, which it is not, so who knows.
  • [7 Oct] We are transitioning at the university level to a new software system, and it has created some hiccups with the application process.  So we apologize for that (it is completely beyond our department's control).  We are currently conducting follow up interviews, and this process will probably last until [15 Oct].
  • Could you please be more specific about what this means? Does "follow-up interviews" mean that you have progressed to the next stage of the hiring process, or is it related to the difficulties with the application system?  In any event, thank you for being willing to post here and keep those of us with a vested interest as informed as possible.
  • [8 Oct]: We have progressed to the next stage of the hiring process.  Will try to keep everyone informed as the process goes forward.

[15 Oct] rejection email that states they picked someone else for the position. (x2)...That was an awfully quick hire. :) [15 Oct] Applied on October 1st, and received a rejection e-mail on October 3rd. The e-mail stated that they have selected a different candidate for this position. Isn't it great that some universities do really respect our time, and conclude the hiring process in 2 days?

[Oct 16] Furman University History Dept. staff reply: We have not yet hired a candidate for this position. We are still in the process of evaluating a short list of candidates. The Workday software does not allow us to send a custom automated message. When an application is declined, it sends the "other candidate chosen" reply. This software is new to Furman this year, HR is aware of its shortcomings, and hopefully we will have a better option in the future. The software does not reflect the wishes of our department. As for the quick turnaround, we are on a compressed timeline for this search, for several reasons. One of these was the desire to notify candidates of their status prior to the MESA conference where many will be seeking jobs. The committee reviewed candidates as their applications came in and met for several hours in advance of the deadline. Early decisions were made about which applications to decline or move forward. I assure you, all due consideration was given to each applicant. We had an exceptionally well-qualified pool for this search, which meant that we had to decline a number of excellent candidates. If you have a question about the search, please direct it to the history department. We are happy to provide information.

(Nov 10) anybody who had a video interview hear back yet?

    • I've completed the online application, but I don't see any place to put in reccomender information--has anyone else had this problem?
    • [28 Oct] Apparently the PSUjobs site doesn't generate reference requests. The options are to upload them as part of your application or possibly to have them emailed. The site itself seems odd, since there was never a 'complete application' button or anything after uploading the various documents.

    • [14 Dec] Informed of rejection upon inquiry

  • [8 Jan] Has anyone heard about first-round interviews yet?

  • I inquired and I was told the following by the depatment contact: "Applications are being reviewed now by the search committee and Skype interviews have not been determined as of yet. I anticipate sending out invitations closer to the end of this month."

Skype interviews have been scheduled

  • [18 Feb] I had a Skype interview on the 5th and they had told me we should expect to hear back mid-week the following week. I haven't heard anything since then- so maybe they went ahead without informing those they did not select for the campus visit (though I hope that's not the case).
