• Assistant Professor in North African, Middle Eastern and Islamic History, to begin Spring 2016
• Applicants must have earned a PhD or equivalent in history or related fields (ABDs will be considered)
• The ability to teach more than one of the following topics will be considered an asset: history of the Arab World, history of the Islamic Civilization, African history, World history, and related courses.   • I'm quite confused about the Phi Beta Kappa thing - what is it and why is it pertinent to this position?
  • It's an undergraduate honor society available only at select US institutions. It seems like an absurd preference for a tenure line hire... but maybe the new hire will be in charge of Phi Beta Kappa upon arrival? I don't understand the relevance either.
  • PBK is only desirable - not required
  • Understood, but it's a strange "preferance" to put in a job posting. Add this to another strange one: teaching both MENA and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • I'm not an applicant for this job, but applicants should look closely at the discussions surrounding this school under 'universities to fear.' The odd language re: PBK lends credence to the idea that the school is inordinantly concerned about pedigree. (OTOH, the language could have been added by admins who have nothing to do with the search and who are unaware of its deleterious effect on faculty diversity).

  • PBK is one element considered in accrediation, and to get a chapter, you have to have a certain number of faculty (and/or students) who are already members; so it helps with that, and with rankings (USNWR, etc.)  Usually a minor point, and often not published, but it is almost always a point in favor.

Northwestern University (IL) - TT Asst. Professor - Iranian or Turkish Studies (incl. History)

• Keep in mind Wheaton's recent firing of a tenured professor for donning a headscarf in solidarity with Muslim women :(
• She wasn't suspended for that but for saying Muslims and Christians worship the same god. Equally disturbing of course.
• She was also Wheaton College's first black female professor to achieve tenure (in 2013). In the most recent round of remediation, the College offered to allow her to continue teaching but have her tenure revoked. None of this bodes well for faculty of color or anyone who values free academic exchange. (of course, WC is within their legal rights, but I'd be *very* concerned about working in Middle East Studies here).

• A question from an outsider looking in -- how many levels are there in this search? Phone interview, conference interview, Skype interview...followed by campus interview? It's a buyer's market, no doubt, but this seems a bit much.

• There are currently five faculty members in the Department of History and it seems like they're trying to have each involved in the vetting process, which is understandable since the Department appears to be very tight-knit. Also, multiple rounds of interviews (the worst that I've heard of is eight or nine) have become the norm now in so many industries that it's not surprising to me that academic search committees would start doing an extra interview or two. 
• It is ridiculous. And this insane process still ended in a failed search last year. May be they should take a hint from some Ivy League schools and reduce the process to solely the campus interviews.
• Honestly, jumping straight to the campus interview introduces unnecessary problems into a faculty search (and actually produces more failed searches, not fewer). With 100+ applicants to choose from, A.S. might be looking to minimize their risk of bringing 3 poorly suited candidates to campus. It's a PITA process, but actually in the candidates' interest IMO.
