Christopher Newport University  (USA: VA) - Middle East & North Africa[]

  • tenure track assistant professorship in Middle East and North African History, to begin 17 Aug. 2016
  • This position will specialize in the history of the Middle East and North Africa with additional consideration given to those who can also teach sub-Saharan Africa
  • Teaching Load 3/3: The successful candidate will teach upper and lower division courses in the candidates area of research and in the Universitys [sic] liberal learning core
  • The Ph.D. in History or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable
  • To apply, submit a letter of application, vita, graduate transcripts (copies acceptable for initial screening), a statement of teaching philosophy, a sample of scholarly work, a sample syllabus for a course you typically teach, and three letters of reference to: Director of Faculty Recruitment, History (Middle East & North Africa) Faculty Search, Search #8134, Christopher Newport University, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News, VA 23606-3072, Or facultyrecruitment@cnu.edu
  • For full consideration: 1 Nov. 2015.
  • Planning to conduct interviews at the AHA in Atlanta
    • I'm quite confused about the Phi Beta Kappa thing - what is it and why is it pertinent to this position?
    • It's an undergraduate honor society available only at select US institutions. It seems like an absurd preference for a tenure line hire... but maybe the new hire will be in charge of Phi Beta Kappa upon arrival? I don't understand the relevance either.
    • PBK is only desirable - not required
    • Understood, but it's a strange "preferance" to put in a job posting. Add this to another strange one: teaching both MENA and sub-Saharan Africa.
    • I'm not an applicant for this job, but applicants should look closely at the discussions surrounding this school under 'universities to fear.' The odd language re: PBK lends credence to the idea that the school is inordinantly concerned about pedigree. (OTOH, the language could have been added by admins who have nothing to do with the search and who are unaware of its deleterious effect on faculty diversity).
    • [? 3 Nov?] Received acknowledgment email plus EEO form to fill.
    • any news at all?
    • PBK is one element considered in accrediation, and to get a chapter, you have to have a certain number of faculty (and/or students) who are already members; so it helps with that, and with rankings (USNWR, etc.)  Usually a minor point, and often not published, but it is almost always a point in favor.
    • [4 Dec] AHA interview scheduled
    • [14 Jan] any news post-AHA interview?
    • [14 Jan] they mentioned that they have Skype interviews scheduled this week for those who couldn't make it to AHA, so we may not hear anything until next week
    • [15 Jan] offer made and accepted
    • [15 Feb] Congrats! Was the offer accepted on Jan 15 or Feb 15?
    • -> 15 Feb, of course. Just a typo.
    • FYI: I know the person they hired and he is neither a PBK member nor has he a degree from an ivy league institution.

  • Keep in mind Wheaton's recent firing of a tenured professor for donning a headscarf in solidarity with Muslim women :(
  • She wasn't suspended for that but for saying Muslims and Christians worship the same god. Equally disturbing of course.
  • She was also Wheaton College's first black female professor to achieve tenure (in 2013). In the most recent round of remediation, the College offered to allow her to continue teaching but have her tenure revoked. None of this bodes well for faculty of color or anyone who values free academic exchange. (of course, WC is within their legal rights, but I'd be *very* concerned about working in Middle East Studies here).

  • Deadline: 20 Oct. 2015.
  • did they have a failed search last year?
  • No idea...but here we are again.
  • Check out last year's wiki. They interviewed a large pool of candidates over the phone, splitting the interviews between all of their faculty. Anybody have any clue what went wrong with the final slate of candidates?
  • Don't know, I did a phone interview and a conference interview but didn't make it to the final round. I liked the faculty, seemed really nice, sometimes these things don't work out.
  • Wait, is the below request for a phone interview correct? It's from 5 days before the app due date?
  • [15 Oct] Request for phone interview
  • [19 Oct] Phone interview
  • [18 Nov] MESA interview invite
  • [3 Dec] Has anyone who did a MESA interview heard from them yet for the Skype interviews?  x3
  • A question from an outsider looking in -- how many levels are there in this search? Phone interview, conference interview, Skype interview...followed by campus interview? It's a buyer's market, no doubt, but this seems a bit much.
  • There are currently five faculty members in the Department of History and it seems like they're trying to have each involved in the vetting process, which is understandable since the Department appears to be very tight-knit. Also, multiple rounds of interviews (the worst that I've heard of is eight or nine) have become the norm now in so many industries that it's not surprising to me that academic search committees would start doing an extra interview or two.
  • It is ridiculous. And this insane process still ended in a failed search last year. May be they should take a hint from some Ivy League schools and reduce the process to solely the campus interviews.
  • Honestly, jumping straight to the campus interview introduces unnecessary problems into a faculty search (and actually produces more failed searches, not fewer). With 100+ applicants to choose from, A.S. might be looking to minimize their risk of bringing 3 poorly suited candidates to campus. It's a PITA process, but actually in the candidates' interest IMO. Good luck to the finalists!
  • [15 Dec] Campus invite x2

  • For full consideration: 4 Jan. 2016
  • Smells like inside search, looks like inside search...
  • Yup. This appeared last year as a VAP with the same qualitications. I applied for it and never heard a word, not even a rejection. Not to mention posting it with less than a month to the "full consideration" deadline and with the holidays intervening.
  • Hard to hate on an inside search in this case. Last year's candidate went there as a VAP. Many early-career candidates would love to have been this lucky after taking a gamble like that (at least, I know I would...)
  • What if, the last year's candidate is leaving Minnesota State for another position, and they're looking for someone to replace him? (x2)
  • Any news?
  • [24 Jan] Nothing here. I'm not sure what to expect in terms of ready communication from Mankato...I say this since my app for last year's VAP still sits on the HR website, un-updated and technically still active.
  • [24 Feb] Any word at all on this one?
  • [2 March] Rejection email.

  • Review begins: 1 Oct. 2015.
  • Was anyone contacted by them BEFORE the deadline?
  • Can I ask what you mean? An invitation to apply? A request for more materials?
  • Several days before the deadline they contacted me the first time and told me they would like to consider me but that my referees have not yet uploaded their letters. Then they emailed all three twice a day until they all did it, then back to me to let me know that they are happy they did and now they can consider me. I have no idea what that means, but it stressed the hell out of me.
  • I got a note the day before the deadline (I assumed it was automatically generated) saying that not all of my letters were in. Not sure whether they pestered my referees, but they didn't send a follow up email.
  • My emails were not automated. They were written by an actual person and also read that way. She sounds awesome, BTW.
  • She does! I also had them follow up via email.
  • Reliable sources are speaking about an inside search.
  • But they don't have anyone in this position as the person who was adjancting left them for Yale! As a SLAC, they also don't have a PhD cohort, so what do you mean by "inside search"?
  • My bet is the part of the ad concerning rank (bolded above) set off rumors. They've been wanting this tenure line for a long time. Glad they're finally getting it!
  • are there any developments with the search?
  • Received email message with update: They are still reviewing apps, expect to contact candidates who made the first cut around 10 November to schedule a Skype interview and ask for more materials. Kudos to them for keeping us in the loop, providing a timeline and apologizing for the lengthy process.
  • Some skype interviews were scheduled on Friday. Can those of us who didn't get emails about this assume we are no longer in the running?
  • how do you know that? three who were contacted told me...
  • I guess they won't bother rejecting those of us who didnt get interviews?
  • In due time. These things almost never come until later in the process. That's why they call them 'wiki-jections.' Cheers and good luck, from another who did not receive an email this week.
  • email rejection received.

  • intend to interview at the AHA
  • As a heads up for the ABD applicants-- when you answer "No" to the supplemental question, "Do you have a PhD?" it will generate a response when you submit that says you're unqualified and won't let you go back to change anything. I've emailed the Administrative Assistant for the department to see if there was a way to fix it--or if they aren't actually considering ABD applicants. Or, you could just answer "Yes" and assume they meant to include "by start date". Hope this helps.
  • Hi- I was a finalist for this job a few years ago as an ABD candidate. I was told on campus that even if I was the top choice that they could not hire me because the adminstration cannot or will not hire ABD. I had an eminant defense date and this was still the issue. Unless your defense is before they meet to make the final decision- you won't be considered. Hope that gives more insight.
