The Visiting Professor should propose and teach four courses: in the Fall, of one course will be on Modern African History and one in the Introduction to Global and Regional Studies. - This has been one of the worst job searches I have seen. No first-round interviews of any kind - in person, or Skype - means the search committee made themselves hostage to their own assumptions about African history and what kinds of candidates they wanted. They never gave themselves a real opportunity to have their preconceptions challenged by engaging with a broad range of candidates. Doing themselves, the applicants, and CCNY an injustice.

- As much as I want, nay, need a job, I won't be applying for this one. From their website, and from the description of the current VAP, it appears that they are looking for someone to teach surveys of African history, East Asian history, and, oh yeah, the Islamic world. It would be very nice to be a "specialist" in half the world's history, but 'taint gonna happen.
- It says Islamic world and either Asia or Africa, not both. Doesn't look like current VAP does East Asia at all, more general Islamic world. [3/20]
  - I could be wrong, but look at the faculty profiles. They have profs. teaching modern Europe, medieval Europe/ancient world, US history, Latin America, and environmental history. Unless they're not listing other VAPs (or someone from another department?), I don't see who else is covering the rest.
  - There's no one teaching East Asia this year. They used to have an Africanist/Islamicist and an East Asianist. It's been cut to one position. Current VAP (who's leaving) teaches World surveys, African history, and Islamic history.
