We are seeking a scholar and teacher working in any field of 20th and 21st century literature with a focus on one or more of the following areas: the environment, ecology, the anthropocene, environmental justice, bioregionalism, or animal studies. The Program for the Study of Women and Gender (SWG) and the Department of English Language & Literature at Smith College invite applications for an equally shared joint tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 2017. We seek a scholar working at the intersection of questions of race, gender, and sexuality in literary and/or visual texts in the contemporary United States.
Successful candidates will demonstrate command of key methodological and theoretical perspectives in both gender studies and literary studies. We are particularly interested in candidates who work in women of color feminisms, Native and indigenous studies, Arab American and Latin@/x Studies; comparative work is welcome. Desirable additional fields or areas of strength include critical race theory, queer theory, drama and performance. We expect the successful candidate to have excellent preparation in literary texts from the twentieth century (and after), and interdisciplinary graduate training and teaching experience in women and gender studies. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment.

Both programs offer considerable freedom in curricular design. In SWG the successful candidate must be prepared to teach SWG 150, the major’s interdisciplinary, team-taught introductory course. The Faculty of Foreign Languages, Literature and Linguistics invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Contemporary British and American Literature. The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in English and specialist knowledge relating to contemporary British and American literature. Research is an important aspect of the position: applicants will therefore be expected to demonstrate an active research programme and promising publication record.
The successful applicant will contribute to historical and theoretical first, second and third year BA courses and MA seminars on British and American Literature, and academic writing about literature. The applicant will also supervise B.A. essays and M.A. and Ph.D. theses in English Literature. The ability to cover introductory teaching in earlier British and American literature would be an advantage. Teaching is in English and therefore near-native proficiency in English is required. Most compulsory courses are taught by distance as well as on-site so the successful applicant must be willing and able to participate in distance teaching, and interest in digital humanities is an advantage.
The position carries full administrative responsibilities and therefore proficiency in Icelandic will be an advantage, though not a prerequisite; a willingness to achieve basic competence in Icelandic in the first two years is expected. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential assets.
This is a tenure-track position with an initial appointment of five years.
The evaluation of academic merits will be in accord with Icelandic Law and Rules for the University of Iceland No. 569/2009.
