We are seeking an outstanding researcher who will play a pivotal leadership role in cultivating interdisciplinary research in the areas of literature, media, philosophy, art history and the sciences, and stimulate investigations of innovative forms of poetic production and new ways of experiencing texts.

The ideal candidate will enhance the department’s recognized strength in the area of poetics in both our Academic and Creative streams, and will articulate and realize an exceptional, long-term research agenda that explores the intersection of literature and media with culture at large. Candidates of interest will have a doctorate in literary studies or a cognate field, an exemplary record of scholarly achievement and graduate supervision within the broad area of poetics, and will possess an established research agenda that explores how the profound changes in communication technologies have reshaped both the practice of poetry and poetics as a discipline. Potential research areas include: digital media and digital humanities; media poetics; the poetics of science and technology; ethnopoetics; ecopoetics; urban poetics; feminist poetics; queer poetics; and philosophy and aesthetics.

This position is directly linked to priority areas in Concordia University’s Strategic Research Plan (2013-18): http://vprgs.concordia.ca/programsandpolicies/researchstrategicplan/download/strategic_research_plan.pdf

In order to successfully compete for a CRC award, candidates are expected to have an outstanding and innovative research program, and the ability to attract excellent graduate students. Tier II CRCs will be exceptional emerging researchers who at an early phase of their careers (i.e. within 10 years of completing their PhD) have demonstrated the promise of a strong research profile and the potential to be leaders in their field.

Tier II CRCs are awarded for five years and are renewable once. These positions offer an attractive salary, an annual research stipend, reduced teaching loads, and the opportunity to apply for start-up infrastructure through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF).

Applications must consist of a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, copies of recent publications, a statement outlining academic experience and domains of expertise for academic supervision, a statement of teaching philosophy/interests, a statement of research achievements, a detailed five-year research plan appropriate to the goals and objectives of the CRC program, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. The University will submit the nomination to the CRC Secretariat at the earliest opportunity.

This position has an anticipated start date of August 1, 2014. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. All applications should reach the department no later than November 1, 2013. MLA JIL 11/1/30

Deadline: for best consideration, 2 Dec. 2013

NOTES:

11/15: *search postponed*-- this from the chair of the search committee: "First, on behalf of Saint Joseph’s University and the English department, let me apologize to you for all inconveniences. Because of new revelations regarding the current status of university finances, the dean, the provost, and several administrative offices have withdrawn their promised authorization for the American literature search. While they have not canceled the search as of yet, their actions have, in effect, forestalled our ability to proceed. Thus, the SJU Human Resources department could not post the position and set up its site to receive applications. Unfortunately, we were not informed of this situation until Tuesday the 12th. Our department chair, Dr. Peter Norberg, has already rewritten our advertisement in the MLA jobs list to reflect these changes."

NOTE as well [from 11/15 MLA JIL]: "Due to administrative delays, this position has not yet been authorized for posting on our Human Resources website as of 12 November 2013. We will repost the position as soon as it is authorized. The search chair is Dr. Richard Fusco, Department of English (fusco@sju.edu)."

  • What exactly did they request from you? The email I received from the administrative assistant said the review wouldn't begin until after the 27th. I was asked to fill out the Affirmative Action form. Is this what you are referring to?
  • 11/15: No--they have requested a writing sample and letters of recommendation.

NOTES:

Does anyone have more information on this search? It seems they are requesting materials before the deadline..

  • I applied on 11/23, through their Interfolio link, and never received a confirmation from the department or an EEO form. From the post above, it seems like others have. Not sure what's going on here.
  • Check with the school to make sure they received it. Interfolio has admitted that the applications they email are getting caught in school spam filters, and they have nothing in place (no ping back/confirmation, nothing) to check on it, so they have no idea how many. (The CEO suggests that this is completely not their fault, despite being a dossier delivery service that guarantees delivery, and has suggested they don't plan to do anything about it. Worth noting, folks.) If this was an email rather than upload application, Interfolio may be responsible for its being lost (and even possibly not considered). Also, highly suggested that you directly confirm with schools all emails sent through Interfolio if you do not receive a confirmation from the school itself in a reasonable amount of time.

Have interviews been scheduled for this position?

  • A few days ago, I wrote to check on the status of the search.  The department's administrative assistant replied that the committee will be meeting on or around 12/30 to select finalists, and will not be interviewing at MLA.  Notification in the first few weeks of January.
  • received very friendly warm email 12/30 letting us know that they will be making decisions in first week of January and scheduling Skype interviews for third week (after mla). Note this was after RFAM.

  • I don't understand... did you get an interview, then a rejection? Or is that not the case?
  • I had a phone interview at the beginning of December and was told the committee would decide in 2-3 weeks.  Have heard nothing back (2/4; still nothing 2/22...). Yes, I realize the below point.  I was being snotty about the "We'll be in touch in 2-3 weeks..." then nothing.  The past several times I have interviewed over the phone or at MLA, I have heard nothing back, ever.  I am discouraged by the basic lack of professionalism on the part of search committees, which may be structural, but is still frustrating. Still have not heard back from Tacoma after the phone interview--6/7.  Never received a rejection.
  • I didn't get an interview here, but in my experience, after you've interviewed with a school, a brief email to the search committee chair checking on the status of the search typically is met with a quick response and full disclosure (something along the lines of "While our search is not yet complete and is very much still open, we have invited a list of finalists to campus"). It might put your mind at ease to know for sure one way or the other. Often (exceptions abound, obviously), schools don't let you know if you weren't chosen to come to campus until the offer has been accepted and signed on the dotted line--HR rules and such.
