The English Department at California University of Pennsylvania seeks a specialist in American literature, post-1865, to teach upper- and lower-division literature courses and first-year composition. Teaching load is 4/4 and will include an early American literature survey, in addition to courses in the area of specialization.

5/23 I happen to be a candidate for the pre-1865 open position at Cal U and can tell you what I heard about the post-1865 position while on my campus interview. A faculty member told me that an offer had been prepared for the post-1865 position and was awaiting approval from the President before being submitted to the candidate. I was also told that the post-1865 hire was a late-19th-century specialist. That's all I know.

Received the same "brusque" (bordering on rude) letter. I also got the beautiful rejection letter from UT-Austin, so I know it doesn't take too much to write a thoughtful mass rejection letter. ABD, with a defense scheduled for April 2013--well prior to their July 2013 in-hand date. Publications, conferences, and research/teaching emphasis in two of the specified sub-specialities. I'm not sure how this stacks up with other candidates, but it's a bit off-putting to be told that this isn't meeting their "minimum requirements." Did all those not making the cut receive this same letter?
I'll chime in, too. I received the same rude rejection letter about not meeting the "minimum requirements."

The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of research and publication for career stage and show exceptional promise as a leading scholar in the field of contemporary British, American and/or Anglophone literature. S/he will be expected to engage in and develop research projects in literature and culture of the late 20th- and 21st-century; to develop interdisciplinary academic networks; to secure research funding and to develop the impact of research; and to attract and supervise PhD candidates. The candidate will contribute to the development of the department’s new MA in Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory (to begin in 2013-2014) and design and deliver teaching for undergraduate and other postgraduate taught programmes (particularly the MA in English 1850 to the Present). The Department particularly welcomes candidates who are open to interdisciplinary collaborations, and collaborations with partners outside the College. All areas of expertise within the post-1945 period will be considered. Candidates may have research expertise in any of the following: post-1945 British fiction; contemporary poetry; experimental literatures; literature and its relationship to material, digital cultures and visual cultures; graphic narrative; 21st-century literature and theory.

I know someone there who says that the English department is quite dysfunctional and that there's a VAP who's a favored inside candidate. I got curious and made inquiries because I saw that there's someone there in this position who is NOT the VAP but who must be leaving.

The successful candidate will teach lower- and upper-division undergraduate courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature at the Tri-Cities campus while also having the opportunity to teach specialized graduate courses to Pullman campus students. In each case the department maintains a strong commitment to interdisciplinary, transcultural curricula in literary studies. Teaching may also include undergraduate courses in world and comparative literature, cultural studies, humanities, and other areas of interest. Service on M.A. and Ph.D. committees, including the directing of dissertations, is expected. The Department of English combines a strong research orientation with a commitment to high-quality instruction.
