===Santa Rosa Junior College (CA) - TT English Instructor - DEADLINE PASSED=== PRIORITY FILING DEADLINE: Friday, February 6, 2015 (initial screening date; open until filled) It is the candidate's responsibility to be sure that ALL required materials are submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the priority filing deadline to be given priority consideration. Applications received after the priority filing deadline will be considered only if the initial priority screening is unsuccessful. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking candidates for the position of tenure-track English instructor with a commitment to student learning and success, experience providing engaging, inclusive student-centered experiences, and a commitment to departmental, institutional, and student programs and services. Position begins Fall semester, August 2015. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval. DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION To meet the diverse needs of our students, the English Department sponsors a variety of programs and services, including a Puente Program, developmental learning communities, a department-wide Work of Literary Merit to introduce literature to our freshman composition students, a Writing Center, and an on-line writing lab. The department has 25 full-time and 60 adjunct instructors who provide comprehensive and varied educational programs to meet the needs of all of our students. With the growing diversity of the District, and in particular our recent designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, our need to build a diverse faculty has become critical. As a result, we encourage persons of all backgrounds and cultures, including persons with disabilities, to apply. Position Description: As a contract instructor in the English Department, the successful candidate will provide classroom instruction across a range of English classes that includes developmental-level reading and writing, freshman composition, critical thinking, creative writing and lower-division literature classes. There are also opportunities within the Department to teach online and hybrid, compressed, and learning community classes. Contract instructors also serve on Department committees and participate in essential activities such as developing new curricula, managing the Student Writing Center, leading programs such as PUENTE, and contributing to norming studies. In addition, contract instructors contribute to the larger culture of the college through service on District, divisional, and program committees and task forces, and participate in regular professional development activities to maintain currency in their fields. SRJC offers courses at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campuses, at the Southwest Center, and in online formats as well. While the assignments are primarily for the campuses as noted above, please note that the District reserves the right of assignment to any location, and that assignments could involve any combination of day or evening classes with mandatory weekly Student Consultation Time. Instructors assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula; participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes; managing labs and Tutorial Centers; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College. Minimum Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree in English, Literature, Comparative Literature, or Composition; OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a Master’s degree in Linguistics, TESL, Speech, Education with specialization in Reading, Creative Writing, or Journalism; OR the equivalent; or a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Language Arts and Literature. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. If you do not possess the minimum qualifications, exactly as listed above, you must file for equivalency. If claiming equivalency, applicants are responsible for documenting all course work, degree programs and related professional experience at the time of application. Preferred: *A demonstrated interest in the diverse community college student population. *Background, training, and/or experience relevant to community college teaching in an emerging federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution. *Background, training, and/or experience relevant to teaching composition, reading, and literature at the community college or lower-division level. *Background, training, and/or experience relevant to teaching developmental reading and writing at the community college or lower division level. *Experience in innovative instructional practices, such as collaborative learning, learning communities (including Puente), accelerated, hybrid, and online instruction. *Interest, experience and ability to assume a leadership role in the life and culture of the Department, including program development, curriculum planning, and assessment and revision of student learning outcomes.
